Hi all,

I'm off to Ireland for the Christmas period, leaving on Saturday evening.

But heres the snag,
I have just changed insurance companies, and I'm still waiting for the insurance details to come in the post.
My tax runs out at the end of the month and not I'm not returning until the 3rd of Janurary. The car is getting an MOT today, so will have a valid MOT.
Where do I stand cause I'm slightly concerned that when I land in the UK that a nice policeman will see my Tax is out of date

I have a faxed copy of my insurance details but appartently that is not enough to get a new tax disc.

So where do I stand

Also if the car is parked on a street and a parking attendant see that the tax disc is out of date what powers do they have to fine you ?

Any advice is most welcomed

Thanks

Parking attendant will issue as FPN, £30 (or £60 if not paid quick enough).

Dunno about the arrivng back from hols bit - take your faxed info with you and hope the policeman is sympathetic. If you can get the insurance cert sent to you on hols, then get tth etax at the first post office you come to on arrival back in the UK you'll probably be OK.

I would chase up the insurance company for a start.

If all else fails, get the car off the road (on a private driveway - if not your own then a friend's / family member's) and declare it SORN whilst you are away.

Go to Ireland in your motor and make sure you have your Faxed Insurance Doc, MOT and RL expiring 31.12.04 and boat ticket with you on your return.

Drive home off the boat where you should be greeted with your proper Insurance Doc and then very first opportunity go to PO and tax it.

However,if stopped by Authorities, explain and show docs and state intention to Tax forthwith. I am 99% sure BiB will accepr this. But if you come across PC R. SOLE then he may report you but has to notify DVLA on a special form as it is only they that can authorise prosecution for excise offence. By the time that form reaches DVLA their records will show vehicle taxed and on continuation from Dec 04 onto Jan 05 so they will NFA as no Excise lost.

The only problem is the fail to display current RFL which Police and their clones can issue a FPN for.But again an explanation may work wonders.

Doubt also if your in Eire any note will be made of expired Lice 1.1.05 on. Not so sure N Ireland with similar RT laws.

The DVLA wont prosecute unless you are past 2 weeks out of date.

Contact your local DVLA office and let them know, they are the only people who would prosecute , so by prior knowledge you should be ok.
