I noticed today that all but one of the Gatso's have been removed from the M42 J3a to J6 in both directions.
Does this mean the new camera system is now live ?
I checked all the new gantrys, but was unable to see any cameras fitted, or is this just preparation for the big switch on ?

I don't think the new cameras are fitted yet.
It's going to be like the M25 system with variable speed limits I think.
The cameras will be on nearly all the new gantrys.
If you look at the road surface, after you pass each gantry you will see the calibration marks on either side of each lane.
I bombed through there myself this morning as I thought the 50mph limit was lifted northbound, but there is still some of it with a 50mph limit, but virtually no cameras to enforce it.
It's going to be like the M25 system with variable speed limits I think.

Again correct, there are still quite a few Gatsos around along the whole stretch extending beyond J6.
Some are live saw one chap get pinged last night and it definitely was NOT from the gantry. He was NOT going that quickly, 57-58 I would estimate. Another guy escaped a ping, last of the late brakers.

Well bombing through there at the moment is asking for it, there are also vans about up on some of the bridges.

Non of the gantries have speed camera's. The removal of the gatso's are because the roadworks are about to finish and the great experiment started.
The variable speed is not being introduced yet. First phase is use of new drainage, lighting and variable speed warnings.
The second phase is the hub of the project but requires the installation of digital cameras on the gantries. Once installed traffic will be controlled in four stages
1) light traffic - no restrictions
2) Congestion - decreasing speed limit camera enforced
3) Severe congestion -Closure of slip roads controlled by ANPR
4) Total congestion - opening of hard shoulder as 4th lane.
No timetable for digital camera's but best guess is summer 05.
