After-market HUD and Facebook status updates....
Discussion
Fisrtly if the mods want to move this to a more appropriate thread, that's fine with me.
I saw this on a friends Facebook timeline... https://www.navdy.com/
It's Head-Up Display (HUD) for any car/any smart phone.
I'm not one to knock the HUD in principle or practice; they're an essential piece of technology on military jets. And I won't attempt to to argue against the utility of vehicle speed, engine warnings and nav info being displayed into the drivers eyeline at the the correct focal length and for that reason I'm tempted to get one, (especially given the number of sat-navs I see on the motorways at night stuck in the driver's eye-line on their daylight setting), but...
Do we really need a device that will display text messages, allow you to compose tweets and superimpose every Facebook update over that wobbly cyclist?

It does say you can disable the social media functions as any sane person would but they'll be some that won't.
I can see the updates now "Just crashed as I was looking at Facebook on Navdy and not watching the road. Lol."
Looks like a decent bit of kit with gesture and voice control but the app function shouldn't even be there however they're after the market that are always on, always connected so it's gotta have that functionality.

I like Naqvdy, just not quite like the price tag that comes with it
I think if you look at the functionality they're offering, they kind of have to have some of those features because people will ask for them, or not buy it because it doesnt have them
Having the features doesnt mean they all have to be used though

Not on the HUD but my BMW has done this on the Nav screen for a few years. Facebook, Twitter, text messages, even my diary and if it worked properly my email too. I seldom use these features though as its easy to be distracted.
Out of curiousity does your BMW in-built system display these updates while moving? I know the Navdy allows you to disable the non-motoring feeds but who will bother or choose to? There are plenty of muppets that haven't twigged that their sat nav has a dimmer 'night setting' or that their foglights have an off-switch! It's main selling point - certainly if you look at he first photo it uses - is that it DOES display all your updates. While you could argue the utility of text saying 'please call the office/spouse', I can't see how being able to compose a tweet has any use. If you really need to be that connected, get the f****ing train or buy one of Google's autonomous cars!
As for legality, it's 'hands free' and legal. But safe??????

As for legal - interesting point.. I'm not touching my phone but I am touching a rotary wheel thing in the car. And the option for it to read out a text message requires the option being selected and then you're more likely to have an accident while you laugh at the car reading text speak to you
If voice control works, I've not tried it. It wasn't until 2003 that we got our first laws specifically on mobile phone usage
By 2003 there was a mobile phone in almost everyone's pocket, and they'd been in the hands of almost every businessman behind the wheel and van driver for decade before that.
Sooner or later we'll see some laws on this s
t 'infotainment' as they're calling it
