Any one on here up to speed on how import car tax banding is worked out?

Most American imports seem to be on the cheaper bracket £220 odd.

I own a 2011MY HSV E3 GTS 6.2 V8 that was persoanlly imported by the Walkinshaw family and states HSV GTS on the V5 yet it's been put into the higest tax bracket?

Any ideas why, is it worth a chat with the DVLA?

Many thanks

Because there's no emission figure for them, so they get taxed the same as pre-01 cars. They get IVA tested individually before being registered.

Is there an emission figure on the V5C? The model/spec's probably been put through type approval, so doesn't need IVAing, and has had the official CO2 figure tested.

I suspect the car was registered on the basis it had UK type approval, unlike the US imports. You then get taxed on emissions, like the rest of us.

Probably because that car has a UK equivalent (VXR) whereas the vast majority of American cars Don't. It would be the same as importing an Evo 10 from Japan and expecting it to be in the £230 tax bracket rather than the same bracket as the UK cars.

It's a 6.2 V8, never going to be other than top bracket I suspect

I've been lucky with my Jap cars in the past, with them being imports.

Just think of it as £280 for the privilege of the car, as you would have paid 220 as a minimum.

Yep, same bracket as my old car I had for 7 years so no issue.

Was just interested in the banding due to it being an import, not a UK, that's all smile
