Evening, all! some advice, please, if you would.

A relative, Australian by birth, has been living and working in the UK, all legal and above board.
He's about to return to Australia, and intends to export his Land Rover from the UK to Aus.
The vehicle is going into storage with the shippers tomorrow, and will be declared SORN as soon as it arrives there. He flies out of the UK permanently on Friday. Vehicle is likely to be shipped in 4 weeks or so, arriving in Aus around 6 weeks later.
I believe he's on a UK licence, having been here for over 2 years.

Question - should he bother paying the £100 LEZ charge to get it to the storage/shippers? If he doesn't, what ramifications is he likely to face should he come back to the UK, and/or if for whatever reason the vehicle is NOT ultimately exported?

I'm not clear on the rules - this seems to indicate that they'll not fine you the first time, but only if it's caught again after 28 days?

Thanks in advance!

When I saw his car last week, half the front numberplate was missing, wasn't it?

sorry, yes - valid question!

It's an early Land rover Defender, so falls under 4x4 light utility.

My understanding is the first time you're caught is a warning. Hefty fines after that, is it £500?

I accidentally went in with our work lorry and the company got a letter saying basically that this is your one and only warning, don't do it again, so I'm sure he will be fine

Have you used the numberplate checker? Might be PLG?

i would definitely check it as my Discovery 1 doesn't need to pay.

The Discoveries were all registered as PLG - if as he says it's Light Goods then it may be liable.
