A good friend of mine has been in a civil partnership for over 5 years, they have lived together in my friends house which was purchased prior to the relationship starting by cash and a small mortgage less that 30k. My friends partner has never earned a great deal of money and has effectively been 'kept' for the duration of the relationship.

The relationship has now ended and my friend is terrified they will have to remortgage to pay off the old partner but I'm not convinced they are entitled to anything. The house has remained stagnant price wise and all improvement a have been paid for by my friend.

Any advice would be greatly recieved.

Same division of assets as a 5 year marriage.

Likely an equal division of joint assets, including pensions earned during the relationship.

depends what you mean by civil partnership
an actual civil partnership has more or less the same rights as a marriage, and that includes property, but people use the term rather loosely and a civil partnership is not always what they mean

Do you actually mean civil partnership in the legal sense i.e. same sex marriage, or do you mean "common law" spouse in the non legal sense. If the former, then yes the property will form part of the marital assets to be divided between the two of them.

Sorry there's no easy answer, your friend will have to see a lawyer. But all assets will be in the "pot" to be shared.
