What is the difference between solid white lines and a no overtaking sign. Ie why do we have roads with broken lines, indicating you can overtake but with no overtaking signs up.





I have lied about it being a quiz as I don't know the answer, however it does seem rather confusing to me.

Solid white lines don't mean no overtaking, just no crossing ie don't go over them. Particularly useful legislation if your a biker, just squeeze past. When I'm in my truck, I pull as far over to the nearside as possible to let bikes do this (would for cars too, but theres never enough room).

I sort of guessed the true difference ie no crossing etc but what is the point?
