Front page todays Sunday Times...."ineffective" is one quote.........."too much time spent behind a desk" is another and "crime is a very low risk occupation for the criminal" is another.
It goes on to say that " the rise in crime in the uk is so SPECTACULAR it is difficult to comprehend"

It is so easy for those who aren't in the firing line to judge.
From the pointy end every shift is pretty much flat out catching scrotes, getting spat at, it really helps morale at the sharp end when stuff like this is printed.

i think too much time behind a desk leads to the other points.
Less time doing paperwork and more time patroling, stop checking people etc would be a start.
I wouldent say we were the worst in the world when all points are considered.
IE officer numbers,
resources and budgets,
paperwork time

The Plods here seem to be taking this as an attack on them, the frontline. It isnt. The problem is systemic, priorities driven from politicians and politically motivated police leaders are the cause.
After all what sense does spending billions on speed cameras have, when crimes against persons and property are on the rise? Why are people who are merely defending themselves or their property routinely prosecuted? etc etc.

It was implicit. It was saying that particular crimes, violence, burgulary etc have risen signifigantly in the past decade, more so than countries such as France or the USA.
And that implies that something is wrong with the way Police resources are being used.

Nobody denied that. But the example I gave was reasonable. What would you prefer the money is spent on; speedcameras or more police?

It is easy to read from fudged figures/journalistic scaremongery. In our area violent crime/ burglaries have significantly dropped, car crime has risen slightly, but as far as being the worst police in the world, these people should go to some other countries to see how hospitable/efficient they are.

It's so much easier to blame poor old plod on the street though. Go to any other country, even those in Europe, and see how the Police behave there! Our Police bosses are not interested in reducing crime, they're more interested in promotion and using the word 'community' as many times as possible in each sentence.
'It's better to make no decision than a wrong one' seems to be the philosophy. Like John Stevens promoting the rights of burglary victims to defend themselves. Funny how he waited until his retirement and big fat pension before having the balls to say it.......
Having met police in various countries inc Singapore, Australia and various European countries, I would say ours are the best, and I'm not exactly their biggest fan ! 
Still doesn't change the fact that some of them are completely rancid and shouldn't be in any job that involves dealing with people or the law.

I cannot believe for one second that the British Police are amongst the worst in the world.
We might all get cheesed off with the cops from time to time but the fact is that in Britain the Police Force is NOT systemically corrupt - as it is in so many other countries.
Nope. Our cops are, for the very most part, honest and decent, and I believe they try their best to do a GOOD JOB. Some may hold opinions that we don't agree with (Brunstrom) but do I think he's corrupt? NO WAY. He may be wrong on some counts - but he's trying to do a job he's trained for to the best of his ability - honestly.
So maybe our lads aren't the best - but I'd like to know which country can claim to have that accolade...
