Hi all,

I have a 1998 Kawasaki KLF 4x4 quad which I have just bought for use on a farm where I keep a few sheep and pheasants and do a bit of shooting.

I bought it because I realised that manually carrying bags of feed about in the winter was not fun... And i just couldn't use my van as it would get stuck within 50 yards.

The quad has been brilliant over this winter so far but I would like to be able to use it on the road as I sometimes need to go on the road between fields, or drive to my shed to collect bags of feed etc.

All of this is probably no more than a mile away from the fields I usually use the quad in.

So... How can I register the quad for the road as it does not appear to have ever been registered before?

It's got all the usual farm quad stuff on it like horn, speedometer, front and rear lights with main/dip beam etc and I've seen these kind used on the road quite a bit.

Can it be registered as an agricultural vehicle? That would be better as it means no tax or MOT needed, however I would naturally need to insure it.

I've searched around on Google but it's pretty confusing! Can the people of PH help me out?

Quad bikes can be registered as a Light Agricultural Vehicle. Probably worth a phone call to the DVLA.

I've just asked the same question and was told that once registered the bike could only be used for travelling on road between parts of my farm only. I.e. no popping to the shops etc.

I believe (stands to be corrected) that it depends on the specification of the quad and how it's been registered.

If it's registered as a road vehicle and meets the criteria, then it can be used on the road at any time.
If it's registered as an agricultural vehicle, then it can, as you say, only be used on the road in limited circumstances.
