That must have been carnage with so many speeders the death toll must be significant.

If you look at street view, it is quite narrow for an A road with lots of side roads and driveways/gateways. It doesn't look very well sighted either. 30mph is probably appropriate.

The solution is obviously to drop it to 20mph instead, that'll sort it

Is this a road that has had a recent speed limit reduction?

The reason I ask is because some of the roads near me were reduced from 40 mph to 30 mph recently and the traffic hardly ever sticks to the new limit. I haven't noticed a single accident or crash though either.

I pass through a small village every day on my way to work. I strictly drive at no more than 30 mph through built up areas. I see people absolutely hammering it through this and many other villages. It is undoubtedly dangerous- the village I mentioned has cars parked on both sides with a few gaps here and there and aside from the risk of a kid running out it's like a game of fking chicken trying to pass these cars with mongs appearing from round the corner at speed nearly causing a head-on collision.

There is no reason to do more than 30 through built-up areas. I can't imagine it's pleasant for people living in the area either.

Yes, for certain stretches, but other stretches look more like a 40mph road.

So they should raise the speed limit because 14% of drivers drive at a speed that would be prosecuted?

A lot of people have very poor observation skills.

But you also have to ask what percentage of drivers are only doing 30 because they don't want to get caught rather than because they feel 30 is safe.

So the answer is make everywhere 'no speed limits' for about six months then set them after that depending on average speed. Good luck with that one.

It's pretty obvious that this is the case. It's astonishing that the authorities can't grasp it!

How about raise it to 40mph instead and review all the data after 6 months?
But that wont happen because of kittens/rabbits children and the complaints from the like of BRAKE minded folk

I think it should be up to the people who live there to decide.

Wow, 14% exceed the limit so it's a majority? Please don't be silly just because it fits your agenda.

As above 14% isn't exactly a majority and just because a few more go between 30 to prosecution doesn't mean they've done it on purpose.

It is possible the speed limit on the stretch is silly and I am totally in agreement that a few limits in my area seem to have been lowered for no reason but given the poor standards of driving 90% of people display I can't say I agree with raising any limits. People don't look ahead, different weather conditions mean nothing, following distances may as well be non existant, indicators mean that they are moving whether or not it is safe, give way lines don't mean give way to the traffic on the main road, you don't need lights on at night, posting your latest update on Facetube can be done on the move "traffic is like such a nightmare LOL" etc

It's probably like that village in Somerset that complained about speeders to the police mounted an operation and the majority of those caught speeding were the ones that lived in that village.

Yep - as per sections 19 and 26 of the governments white paper on setting local speed limits. biggrin

That is kinda the rationale behind the 85th percentile:

If there are that many people ignoring the speed limit it rather suggests that the limit may not be appropriate.

I've noticed this in Liverpool. They've gone mad with 20 zones many on major through routes, some on big 4 lane roads in industrial areas. Going down some, you wouldn't know they were a 20, I'd suggest that most cars do well over 35 through them - unsurprisingly, because the roads are so wide and it's not a significantly built up area.

That said, I've seen some spectacular smashes where people have run the red lights at the junctions, so I guess the council are trying to do something about the severity of the crashes and the only thing they can think of is dropping the speed limit.

Except that results in speed limits being set by the minority with a bee in their bonner and ultimately you'd have 30mph limits everywhere
