I bought a car at the very start of December and I was wondering when the V5c may turn up. I bought the car remotely and had a collection company deliver it to me (otherside of the country) well late last week I receive this through the post:

Rather than getting the V5c I have a "Thank you for your application for a V5c registration certificate....", it wouldn't worry me so much except it has a specific DVLA employee listed on the letter, rather than a generic mass generated letter. The employee's details are masked where it says "our ref" and also on the return envelope supplied with the letter.

Also what makes me nervous is that the seller had lied about obvious details of the car, nothing worth worrying about and especially as it was bought blind. When I questioned the seller about the lies he lied over his lies, blaming me for swapping bits on it etc... Obviously not the case!

I had it HPI'd before I bought and I re-HPI'd at the weekend to double check as this letter had made me think the worst, IE it was stolen which it is not listed as. It is registered as a cat-d but I knew that before it was bought and it's not an issue.

Normally I'd write it up as the seller has mislaid the V5c and applied for it on my behalf without my knowledge, but the circumstances mentioned above do worry me a bit.

Does anyone have any advice on this situation? Thanks/Appreciation in advance. I thought SPL was probably the best place for this query!

Just to be clear, I'm obviously replying to the letter, I'm just interested in insight!

Could be an older copy of the V5 was used on your sale and a newer copy of the V5 is still in circulation (or now with a log book loans' co)
or
V5 was correct for car but he had another V5 for the same car and sold a cloned car with that V5 (ringer) and now the DVLA have 2 new V5 requests for the same car (normally the police contact you in that situation not just the DVLA).

Probably nothing to worry about.

How did you handle the v5, did the older keeper send it off? because if he did then presumably you didn't sign it as you were not present, which could explain this

Do the VIN numbers match the ones on the HPI report? do they look legit? You might have a ringer.... which will show up clear on HPI if done via the reg number.

Is it something liable to be nicked eg a modern'ish BMW & did you buy it from someone in Birmingham or Bradford?

This could be because the seller has put your details in the wrong section.

I'm guessing the DVLA has sent you this because someone else is trying to claim ownership of your car. If they can't determine whether you are the owner or not within a certain time period then it will get complicated, hence why they've sent you the letter.
I'd phone the DVLA ASAP.

I'm hoping it's Ging84's scenario, I wasn't there to sign. I'll be checking the VIN next time I go to the unit.

The car is a Japanese import, I'll post it up once I get this cleared up!

Probably this a blank signature box , which is silly as he could have just done PP and your signature, or just done your signature for you.

Some 28 years ago on purchasing a mini from a dealer I ended up with 2 V5's - one was correct, and the second showed me as both owner and previous owner.

In my experience this perfectly demonstrates the accuracy of the DVLA's database.

I had a similar letter, the dealer spelt my name wrong and they couldn't read the hand writing

I was given a phone number, I phoned them, they sent out a new V5, with my surname spelt wrong!

Just fill it out and see what happens

Can you ring them up, that's what I did thinking about it, I gave the ref of letter and they told me the notes on screen. I then completed the form . They can be quite helpful, or completely pitiful
