There's a road in central Bristol (Quay St) that previously had signage indicating 'Bus, Taxi, M/C Only' here:

https://goo.gl/maps/UjoMv

You can see on streetview that the signs have been removed (poles still in place) and a yellow 'Diverted Traffic' sign has appeared. However, the painted signage on the roads surface remains.

I'm curious as to the legalities. Are the council saying this has changed and cars are now allowed through or is it an oversight? Do the painted words carry any weight or is it all about the metal signage?

Thanks in advance.

Is there blocked road stopping you from getting on the road in the normal manner?

There is no physical barrier if that is what you mean.

Does my link not work?

The link does work. I guess my question didn't really make sense!

If that is the only way onto the road as the other entrances are blocked by road works I can't see how the police will be able to give you a ticket. I'm no expert though.

The local council will probably have a list of road closures/changes on their website somewhere, maybe worth a look?

It looks to my eyes like the restrictions have been suspended for the life of the diversion. Road markings are not (normally) enough to be enforcable on their own.

ETA the post above is quite correct.

You can check for local roadworks on roadworks.org, but it won't tell you details of a diversion route.

(I'm a highways/traffic engineer, and that's how I would read the arrangement)

Thanks

I suspected the same; that the restrictions have been lifted as construction is taking place and lorries etc need access.

However, you can still access the road by going round the long way....

But on entering you always get buses and taxis wringing their fists! I've seen a very near miss where a bus obstructed a car and would have like to back the guy up but it is unclear as it stands.

I use it everyday as it cuts a good few minutes off my commute smile
