Hello chaps.

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this strange one.

My wife has bought a 2nd hand smart forfour, we were due to collect the car tomorrow at two o'clock in the afternoon (as this was convenient for us).

We cannot tax the car.

On a vehicle enquiry check it tells me the vehicle was last taxed in November of last year, and the mot is due on 11/1/16.

If you use the online tax system, vehicle details cannot be found.

If you use the automated telephone system, same result.

So wifey spoke to an advisor , "sorry we cannot tax it, you will have to take the new keeper supplement to a post office".

The advisor could not give a reason (and wouldn't give her name), when asked what my wife was supposed to do as the post offices would be shut, may she drive the car home and do it in Worcester on Monday etc etc ?

The answer was the car must not be driven on the road until it is taxed, if we do and are caught the vehicle will be seized, DVLA cannot tax it, it must be a post office, and she'd have to collect the car another time !

What fooking god given right do DVLA suddenly have to decide what time you can buy & tax a car ?

What can a post office clerk do that the mighty DVLA cannot ?

Anyone any ideas ?

To say I'm somewhat annoyed is an understatement.

They won't be open, and I'm guessing, breaking in would be naughty ?

I doubt it will be seized. It's also two days. Do you think you'll get caught in those two days?

The drive home will involve a stretch of motorway, rather than a few off motorway miles, so to be honest I'm too chicken to take the chance of being picked up.

Pre Police seizure days, I wouldn't have given two fooks and I'd just have driven it home, these days I'm not so sure.

Is there only one post office nearby? They don't all shut at lunchtime on Saturday.

I'm not familiar with the area.

We have googled it and gotten the location of several post offices nearby, I've had to cancel the job I was doing in the morning, and we will be there at nine am.

DVLA have won, I've altered things to suit their mighty power, but why should I have to ?

Why don't DVLA just do what they are supposed to do ?

Lots of Post Offices are open on Saturdays, as you've obviously worked out. What a waste of bandwidth this whole thread has been.

Well fk off and bother someone else then !

I've had to cancel a job just to suit DVL fking A, because the asswipes can't use their computer system, I don't know the area the car is in, where the post offices are, what their opening times are.

Why can't it be done online, or via the automated phone system, or via a DVLA employee/advisor, did you not read the post ?

Why am I having to go to the post office at all to tax a car ?

i would have though the post office would have some sort of search function on there website that would allow you to find post offices in an area and see what services they provide and when they are open. They certainly used to.
Perhaps now they have stopped as part of a dvla conspiracy to stop people buy cars at 2pm on a saturday

I just used this link, selected "vehicle tax"and it showed me that there are 20 Post Offices in my home town, of those 7 are open to at least 17.30 and two until 8pm, one is even open from 5:30am.

Pretty good and easy

Exemption only applies if it has no current MOT

OP it might be a good idea not to swear at the Post Office as they might get offended and not tax your wife's car for you!

Why am I even doing this ?

I have found one locally, but I can't find out if they do car tax, the post offices link to do that isn't working just now.

I've sent DVLA a e-mail asking why all three of their systems are fked, but as they make the rules, it will be allowed !

Remember the days when it just didn't matter, you'd drive home and do it on Monday ?

FFS don't buy a car on a Sunday , or an evening !

I can't understand how the post office will be able to accept payment and authorise the car to be used on the highway, when DVLA can't, with any of the three systems they have available, online, automatic phone, or advisor.

They have a database that says the car exists, they accept it is mot'd, and insured, but DVLA can't tax it, apparently the post office can.

The DVLA advisor couldn't advise my wife on why this should be either.

My wife couldn't do it this afternoon, as the new keeper supplement is in Stourbridge, and the post office won't accept just the number, they need the piece of paper.

Use the link that I've posted, then select "vehicle tax" in the drop down box amd then type in the town you want and press "search" it gives you all the info you want.
