i just thought a second ago (so idea not properly thought through) but rather than catching people for speeding (i know what peoples opinions are of these ) but could there be some kind of insurance register which shows which cars are insured (and taxed) and those out of date etc that the camera could refer to after reading the number plate, then a letter could be sent to the owner giving them a month to either get insured or have a good explanation by say 30 days otherwise they would get a £200 pound fine.

i think something along those lines would be a much better way of spending money than catching people doing 65 in a 60 zone at 2am - we know who the real criminals are - refer to this post

now i can see the drawbacks in that they cant detect the driver, spose though they could still detect the cars with no insurance at all which are the ones who most need to be caught

People with no insurance generally have no cash. It's going to cost the police more money to go after them, chase them for the 200 quid fine and eventually scrap their cars when they don't pay up.

How much easier to stick a "safety van" on bridges over the M74 and M6 and catch those of us with jobs for doing 80 on an empty road. 60 quid, no hassle.
