Car tax fine

A couple of months ago I had my car scrapped and gave the Scrapman the V5 but kept the slip that I was meant to send off. Unfortunatley I lost the slip and forgot about the whole thing, assuming that the scrap merchant would apply for papers after a while.

Today I recieved a £40 fine for not re taxing or SORN'ing my car. I dont know whether it is worth paying or arguing. Think I may say I did post the slip off and it must have been lost in the post, will this get me off the fine?

I know this is all really my fault but I dont really have £40 to throw away.

Tell em you posted it back to them.

As they don't issue receipts etc., how are you supposed to know that they have lost it?
