Dropped a major clanger in renewing my insurance

I had put the wrong date in my calendar for when the MOT was due.
It expired on 22/01 DOH

My new policy was due to start with More Than tomorrow.
I have rang them and explained the situation, that I have got the wrong date for when the MOT expires and the car in booked in for Monday for its MOT.

They have cancelled the policy, for there is no valid MOT.
They have waived the cancellation fee, but here is the question

On quotes you are asked 'have you ever had a policy cancelled?'

Would I have to answer 'yes'?

More Than have not been exposed to any risk as the policy has not start yet.

TIA

Jim

I don't understand why you have rung them.

I didn't think you needed an MOT for insurance to be valid... how would you drive a SORN untaxed car to the MOT station if this were the case?

Sounds odd. According to the online policy documents : http://www.morethan.com/sites/default/files/930024... A valid MOT is only required for breakdown cover.

A case where honesty isn't the best policy. Why the hell did you see fit to grass yourself up to your own insurers for lack of an MOT? You should have got the car MOT'ed and that was that.

Ask loonr1

Does it count as a "cancelled policy" if the contract never came into effect?

I'm an idiot for letting my MOT lapse

I wanted to be up front as I didn't want my insurance cancelled and not knowing about it
I've heard of too many horror story's that policies get cancelled and the policy holder knows nothing about it.

Didn't want to be in the position 6 months down the road, and BOOM 6 points.

Wrongly or rightly, I assumed at the inception of the policy they would check MOT / TAX.
So I thought I would ring and explain the situation

Loon, yes they stuck me on hold for about 5 minutes, then came back and cancelled my policy.
It's no bother, it will teach me to be more organised in the future.

I'll get the MOT on Monday and just re-insure at that point

But back to my original question..

'Have you ever had a policy cancelled'

What do I respond?

Cheers

Given many insurers' propensity to wriggle on claims, I'd always advise you to answer the question honestly.

There's a lot of internet hype about this making your life difficult, much like the story that no MOT = automatically invalidated insurance.

My experience, as someone who has had two policies cancelled, is that the only material effect is that it's harder to use online comparison sites as some insurers won't quote if you answer yes to the question.

Lob your requirements at a broker and let them sort it out. I've just had a renewal of £350 for a Jag STR so clearly the cancellations aren't hurting too much. Once a human looks at it, the main issue will be the reason for the cancellation - if it's a fraudulent claim for example, all bets are off.

It makes no sense, but the fact remains that cover had not started. I wouldn't regard that as a cancellation.

And who will be covering you while you drive to and from the MOT test ?

An MOT is not required to have an insurance policy, and a policy should not be cancelled because of lack of an MOT. You need to start a formal complaint with More Than. What you do not want is for them to report a policy cancellation to the insurance reference agencies, because that could mean problems obtaining insurance in the future.

You are required to have an insurance policy to take your car for an MOT (unless you are taking it there on a trailer).

My usual Garage will hopefully have a trader policy, but if not, he has a flatbed, so he will be able to collect the car. Will find out tomorrow.

So not worried about that tbh

Sorry, don't believe ya. If they have cancelled, it's because of reasons you haven't told us about, not lack of MOT.

Having an MoT has nothing to do with insurance. All an MoT does is to confirm that on a certain specific date & time the vehicle met the requirements for the test to be passed.
You cannot drive to & from a pre-booked test without insurance, although you can do so without road tax.
No insurer will refuse to insure an un-MoT'd car, nor will they refuse to insure an un-taxed one.
There is something decidedly strange about this thread.
