Story on Breitbart London, Wiltshire Police have admitted to inquiring of newsagents the identities of those purchasing the magazine's post-attack issue.
Perhaps I ought to cancel my Private Eye subscription and obtain it from random outlets around the country, whilst heavily disguised?

"Well meaning" but fundamentally wrong Plod in an area that could be mistaken for "Hot Fuzz"?

Who then gets words of advice and no disciplinary.

Sounds like the right course of action, to be honest.

It wasn't just Wiltshire who were asking for the names of Charlie Hebdo buyers.

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/feb/10/polic...

Sir Peter Fahy, the national police lead for preventing extremism, has said that the police should not be asking for names and that it appears “over-zealous and unnecessary”. He also says, in a letter to The Guardian that “...it is important that we do not erode the very freedoms that we are trying to protect."

What on earth made them think that was the right thing to do? Buyers of the magazine are more likely to support free speech rather than threaten it.

I once bought a subscription for a good friend as a gift. So that's two people on the radar?

Well done Mrs Paul Merrett.

Sorry handpaper for not spotting your thread earlier.

Certainly a misjudgment. Peter Fahy sums it up nicely.

I don't think those doing this would be doing much CT work, somehow.

They got a link on the 'rape guidance' thread a couple of weeks back, too. I've never read such garbage.

Or maybe it was an attempt to see if people who were known to have certain leanings were buying it in order to use it to further their cause?

I think it was reported as a misguided attempt to identify locations where police intervention might be required - i.e. supporters of the magazine who might subsequently become targets.

Bloody stupid idea whatever the reasoning behind it!

'We only spied on the families of Stephen Lawrence and Ricky Reel in case extremist groups aligned themselves to the cause and used it to stir up trouble....

A bit like Lord King, Lord Blair, Admiral West and the other one trying to bounce the Snooper's Charter through the House of Lords on the back of the Charlie Hebdo and Paris supermarket attacks then?

"$PERSON said that, so it must be nonsense."
Stupid, and thoughtless, wherever it is written, and, appropriately, whoever wrote it.
If you had actually read the article, rather than moan about its source, you would have seen that it's based on a letter published in the Guardian:

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/feb/08/charl...

There are two follow-up articles, linked from that page.
Care to comment on the story now, rather than snipe?

That tallies with the story of why Wiltshiremen always go in groups of three- one who can read & write, one who can count plus one to keep an eye on the two intellectuals.
