So driving through the middle of nowhere (country road, no houses, fields) had to take evasive action for a large dog, which promptly ran off into a field.

Luckily I missed it.

I'm curious about the legal requirements had I have hit it? Would the police care? Who would I call to actually attend?

If you hit, and damage, a dog (or certain other animals) you must stop and if required by someone with reasonable grounds to do so give your name, address and vrm of the vehicle, and the name and address of the vehicle owner if different. If you fail to stop or provide details at the scene you must report the accident to the Police as soon as reasonably practicable and in any case within 24 hours.

In the first instance call 101 to report it and be guided by the advice given.

The website quoted by paintman (which he has since deleted!!!) includes some made up terminology. The actual law on road traffic accidents is here:

They don't matter any way: you can squish them at will.

Thread from about a week ago on the same subject. Within the posts with the relevant info, you also get some added entertainment value from certain users arguing with each other hehe

I have. You said that there was some made up terminology so little point in people taking on board inaccurate advice. Perhaps you will contact Norfolk Constabulary with the necessary corrections?

The Norwich info page differs from the statute. Is the statute wrong?

You said some of the terminology in what was on their website is made up.
I'm suggesting you advise them of the bits they've got wrong for the benefit of others that may view the website.
Leave it with you.
