I’m looking to finish work in the middle of this year, about 6 months short of the “official” retirement age. I’ve no plans to take up any other employment, but have been wondering what my official status would be when it comes round to renewing policies (home/car etc). Would I be unemployed or retired? (Are there any other options?) and would this have any affect on the said policies?

You would be retired rather than unemployed.

Unemployment means that you don't have a job but are available to work.

Retirement means that you have ceased to work (you don't have to have taken a pension).

I suspect 'retired' is cheaper than 'unemployed' but couldn't say for definite.

If you've given up work, have no intention of working again, and are of independent means, then you're retired. Doesn't matter if you're 65 or 25.
