I've just had a nice letter through the door, stating that the council are liable for damaging my car as a speedbump was too high. I have to go and get two nice new cats and send the bill to them for reimbursement.
Fortunately for me, I still have all the documentation that states the humps were supposed to be 65mm and they installed 95mm high bumps.
I'm over the moon, not only will I have two new cats, the council has had to come out and reduce the height of the bumps.

The regs wont help I'm affraid, what I had was a letter stating that the humps were going to be 65mm.
You would have to check the initial planning consent to find out what height the bumps have been allowed to be. Quite a lot of new installations are at 75mm, so might be worth getting out the tape measure for a quick check, then doing a bit of research.
Unforunately, some have been approved for heights as high as 100mm.

Hmm. All very well but that's MY taxes paying for the damn things to be laid, MY taxes paying for them to be reduced to the correct height and MY taxes paying for your new cats.
If YOUR council hadn't put them there in the first place they could have given you a rebate. I suggest YOU complain to YOUR MP
Great result. Never let them get away with it. OK, it's our money wasted in the first place to put in these dangerous obstructions and our money paying out compensation for damage caused, but surely someone in the council and / or highways will get a telling off for being so stupid. Errr, oh maybe not.

Did you check what height they were going to be, before they were installed? Very organised of you!
Yup. I keep my eyes open for all speedhump installations in the North East and object to every single one I see.
Unfortunately, some slip through the net as I can't watch every single newspaper, but I do what I can.
I now have a little organisation I call myself - RASH, residents against speed humps. Unfortunately, I'm the only member, but it sounds better than an individual complaining.
Er - I think it is mm. 75mm being about 3 inches.

Just to check - my biro is 145mm long and I think most of the speed humps I go over are less than a biro high. Having said that most are an obstruction to the road, especially the square ones that you can go over in a 4x4 at well over 30, but need to be taken at about 3mph in a TVR, with plenty of revs, to avoid stalling.

You can take them at 40 in the Boxster, not even a twitch
