NIP speeding, car sold months ago
Discussion
Probably answering my own questions but would like some clarification
My wife part exchanged her car at a garage early in November, today she has received a NIP for said car.
I have asked her and she cannot remember either way if she received a letter saying the DVLA had received her V5. But she did receive the VED refund cheque - which I understand is generated and sent to her when the DVLA receives her V5 documentation.
We have all the paperwork for the purchase of her new car and the trade in of the car in question, we don't have any proof of posting for the V5 - but as I mentioned above she has had the VED refund so must have been recieved.
Now in this world of guilty until proven innocent I take it the course of action we should be taking is to write a letter explaining the situation with as much detail as we can (garage details, receipts and part ex details).
will they then approach the garage to get the details of the people who bought the car off them?
I also assume we should be approaching the DVLA to see if they still have her down as the keeper and get that corrected

Wow, it's not a big deal. You don't need to exhibit any paranoia, just tell them when you sold the car and to whom. The form even tells you to do this iirc.will they then approach the garage to get the details of the people who bought the car off them?

Regarding the DVLA, you could do, but I wouldn't bother personally unless you get repeated NIPs

As above, answer NIP. Look for the receipt of sale. Avoid involving the DVLA unless you really have to because chances are they will not be any help.
To give you an idea of how useless they are:
I sold a car to my best mate, he received a V5 from the DVLA, he sold the car to someone else and 8 months after that i received a V5 for that car (and a £200 fine because it was not taxed), i contacted the DVLA and informed them that i had sold it and i knew they had registered it with someone else and was told they had no record of that.
Morals of the Story - Fill out the NIP 100% accurately as you should do. And that the DVLA are f
king useless.
