Is it me or has the Highway code recently changed to suggest the speed limit along a single carriageway signed by the silver background with black stripe NSL is 35mph. It seems that the people round my way struggle to understand the highway code OR have been beaten into the eternal fear of speed by the current government and drive accordingly.
Ok, I love the opportunity to overtake them and re-educate them to the actual Speed Limit but am confronted with the usual high beam, gestures etc. Obviously the limit is a 'maximum', but surely one should make progress near to that speed or am I missing something?

I've just improved my overtaking skills to cope. Unfortunately such slow speeds are why accidents are not going down. The odd numpty is forcing more and more people into overtaking.stooz said:

I always try not to get "annoyed" by other people's driving, but I certainly give a big
whenever that happens. I got one the other day after I overtook a big 4x4 who was trundling along a dead straight NSL road at 50mph, nothing else in sight... I was following one other car behind a JCB on Monday morning. The JCB was doing about 20mph in an NSL. There was some oncoming traffic, but plenty of missed opportunities for a quick overtake before the bloke *eventually* put his foot down and pootled past after about a mile. And what was he driving ? It was a DB7 ! FFS!

Do you find with these people that sit there doing 40mph in the NSL that they then continue to do 40mph in a 30mph when you sit there abiding the law and all you see is them disappearing off in to the distance?
This really winds me up, and why is it that there are never any scamera van's around when you need one?!?!
I was going to post a reply to Dibble's "What shall I do tonight" type thread, but I some how feel that the halo effect of a marked car wouldn't catch these people. Shame really as I would love to know what their reason/justification is for doing that speed everywhere.

You ungrateful idiot. You should know that those people are congratulating you on your excellent overtaking skills. For gods sake, don't you know anything?

When I get this I always take it as
"Well done on an excellently performed maneuver"
Yep, I always wave as a thank you for the acknowledgement. In fact I find waving a thank you is an excellent retort for any type of aggressive gesture and always deflates and disarms drivers that are giving me the coffee been or two fingered salute.

That would be my experience, yes... And if the 30 limit in question is one we're both passing through, you can also be certain that, having reached the NSL section on the far side of the 30, you'll soon be back on their tail, doing 40 once again

I suppose that it is only a matter of time before overtaking is seen as reckless driving and then your average enthusiastic driver will be stuck-on even though said driver may not be breaching the noted limit.

Yes. It wouldn't take much additional paint to cause many roads to have no legal overtaking places. Then you only need 1 numpty or law-abiding HGV and the effective NSL speed limit is 40.
Perhaps we should be grateful that the gov't still thinks speed is the ultimate danger. When they've moved on to citing overtaking as the only cause of all KSIs, we'll look back fondly on today....
