Night time M4 speed checks

At 3am this morning, on my way back from work, I saw a marked BiB on the M4 hard shoulder between J17 & J18(Chippenham & A46) operating a camera. I had heard that Avon police were going to carry out night-time speed checks....but at 3am?

Bit off topic but you seem to be the guys who would know.
Driving through some 50mph roadworks at about 60 on a sunday night, empty road, no road wrokers about etc. Had a bright flash in the rear view mirror as i passed under a bridge. Do they operate flash speed cameras at night on motorway bridges?

Call me a ignorant anti-social speeding lunatic, but I choose to drive at 100 mph down a dry and empty motorway in the small hours of the morning in a car quiet capable of handling such a speed, what is the problem?
And without stating the apparently obvious ( and with every attempt to avoid the usual cliche ) would the public servant in the police car be better deployed in a high profile capacity, cruising around residential areas with a high rate of burglary or violence in order to provide a visible deterrent?
At 3 am - is that not a better use of resources?
Or am i missing something?

Indeed, these are the sort of tactics that don't really help the image of the police in the publics eye.
I regularly see TVP units out with the hairdryers at 8.30am on Sunday mornings in Reading. Not sure what that's all about, I can't imagine it's a common time for accidents. One of the guys told me he'd clocked me at 25mph in a 40 limit and I should try harder (I was on my bicycle
) Perhaps there's not much else to do on that shift...
