following yet another intruder, can any resident BIBs offer advice? If i need to secure, or target harden, a garage, would you guys recommend either overt cctv or a pir alarm system, or indeed both?
what im after is a system that will scare off the scrotes, so, what im asking i suppose is, which of the two has the best effect in your experience of crime prevention?

thanks for the quick replies guys. i suppose the question is whether or not to scare em off with a siren or obtain footage that may lead to a conviction. ive absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the scrotes live at the bottom of my road, but TBH id rather just target harden so they dont even come onto my property, rather than run the risk that the film is not good enough to convict. the flipside of course is that it can be tricky to set an alarm system that works reliably and doesnt just go off when a fox or whatever goes into the garage. tricky. is there any form of domestic defence that really strikes the fear of god into a scrote?
the smoke system is brilliant. You can get it for offices or for cars. The smoke is made from Glycol and is harmless. You cannot see anything when it has gone off and they would struggle to see what they were doing when it went off. Outside the garage door you could put a removeable post to reduce the chance of the car leaving the garage. The alarm system would be needed to trigger the smoke system. Go for point to point beams across the car doors at high level to avoid small animals, alternatively, plug the gaps in the doors or walls!
Making lots of sound is great if you only do it in real cases. false alarms will only annoy.

But if the smoke is generated and the scrotes are inside the garage and can't see, they may bump into something or trip over a trolleyjack and hurt themselves. In that case you'd be prosecuted for infringing their human rights.

Another one I like is the bird scarer. Shotgun type cartridge (no shot just a charge) is held in a frame with pin sprung back, attached to trip wire.

Be a twat if the pit was open with all that smoke as well!!

I made a quick easy alarm in my garage by fitting a 500w lamp on a PIR inside looking at the door as you walk in. The 240v Output was connected to a 12v transformer and the output of that through a key switch to a bell box with siren and flashing lamp.
Just made it out of junk i found in my garage and it works well!
Visible deterrents are best lots of bright lights outside and CCTV must be an off putter but expensive.

You must be a modern version of Caractucus Potts, did you make your own car as well?
Is the Garage somewhere you could Smart water? Would mean they are well and truly "fingered". Else what about a computer based cctv system with a Broadband link back to your house. Link it with an alarm that warns you when the intruders are there and a Speaker to let them know you are watching??

I think we could be missing the plot.. What is in the garage? The cost of the sophisticated systems being offered could be a little over the top if the car is just a Trabant.......
Could always employ a 24hr guard ... might wash the car for you too!

A lot depends on where the garage is located....in reality...you don't have to spend too much and everything is found on ebay...
I would recommend the following;
Dummy alarm box;
and finally one of these;
All of those on ebay for less than £35 in total!

thanks for all the tips guys. i considered the cctv via pc idea but know that the grainly green and black footage youd get would be next to useless. so, if i did do the cctv option id get a pir light inside the garage to get some decent footage. the trouble is, would that deter them? do cctv stickers work? i like the smoke idea, i could take the boards off my pit and then just put em back if a scrote falls in 
- may end up inside myself though
as tony says though, the best option is probably all 3 security measures so theres no real substitute for a half decent alarm too. what ill have to do is mount it in a position that wont trigger if a fox etc wanders in. i can see me keeping an eye on ebay in the near future i really need a big old dog though, theres no substitute for that either
