Burglar in the area eyeing up my house
Discussion
Apparently some local scumbags have been released from prison recently, and completely coincidentally a house a few streets away got hit shortly after. Police have been round the area letting people know and to keep an eye out, call 101 if you see anyone suspicious etc. but one of our neighbours saw a scrote on a bike casing our street, and paying particular attention to our garage.
So, other than cleaning out the garage and leaving the door open or camping out in the garage with some homemade weaponry, is there anything we can do?
Luckily the house is occupied two days a week, and we have a few neighbours that are in (work nights / housewives / retired etc.) but still not too relaxed.

checking all your window locks work, and any door locks meet the standards required by your insurer, and that no keys are hidden under a mat, or kept anywhere visible inside the property through any windows or doors, including the letter box.
that would be a very good start.
Then maybe considered an alarm and / or more secure locks

Go & have a chat with the neighbours, suggest some beers in exchange for keeping an eye out.
I'd at least install some PIR lights, the robotic ones that record video so follow anyone around & are quite good. We have a couple & they work great.

Install the Best Alarm system to House And Garage that money can buy.Flashing Alarm boxes showing alarms set, IS a must when scrotes do their recce.
Half decent alarms look no different whether set or not, i.e. they flash all the time. Otherwise you'd be advertising the fact that you'd forgotten to set it. Even internal indicators of whether the alarm is set or not are not usual.Garage door a roller or an up and over?
If i was spending 5 days a week away from home, I'd look at fitting a removable bollard in front of the garage door to stop it from being opened.
Another option would be to ask a friendly neighbor to park their second car on your driveway blocking the garage through the week, this way theives may think the house is occupied as they will see a car coming and going at different times. If its not a roller door then this should also prevent the door being opened.

For what it is worth, thieves are probably checking out your house and car for them being unlocked every few days anyway. Don't wait until a scrote is seen before making your property secure.
Fit deadbolts to an up over garage for and beef it up and secure it from inside too.
Don't have nightmares.

A neighbour had a couple of large dogs that he kept in his garage overnight in part to deter people from taking his motorbike. Someone broke in to steal the bike and killed the dogs.
That's a bit harsh. Friend of ours had their GSD doped - Police said it's very common. Dog was fine.Devil2575 said:
Highly visisble CCTV camera. They're not that expensive these days.
Unless you have something of particular value thieves tend to go for easy targets.
That made me smile. Our very visible CCTV camera was inches from the scrotes head as he stole the mirror covers from our old car some years ago. He never even saw it. Don't bank on thieves being that clever.Unless you have something of particular value thieves tend to go for easy targets.
On the plus side we got a cracking shot of his face as he looked straight at it and he was arrested the following day.
Get yourself a bloody good security light, preferably one that triggers an alarm in the house as well.
