Exporting a car
Discussion
I wonder if someone can help me. I want to buy a Hummer H2 in the UK and take it straight away to France. The problem is that although it would have french insurance this will not be legal in the UK.I have tried getting short term insurance quotes but no one seems to be able to do it. So how do I get the car from the dealer to Dover?
My son had the same problem when he bought a car in Birmingham to take home to France.
In the end I added it as a temporary addition to my own car policy for 48 hours with him as a named driver. Drove the car to Dover, with it not actually taxed because that was not as easy as getting it insured, it went on the boat and the V5 was immediately sent to DVLA as 'permanently exported'.
The best way in this case would be to add the vehicle to someone else's, maybe a friend's, policy for 24 hours.

French insurance only insure cars registered in France, just like UK companies only insure cars registered in UK. It's an EU requirement.
The answer is to initially insure it in UK which then permits use anywhere in the EU. It will probably take yonks for it to be registered in France, but just make sure that you can be rebated any unused time.
