Hi Guys,
I have look and searched for info to no avail.
With the road tax law changes am i correct in thinking you can now unsorn you car simply by re taxing?
Does that now mean if you are having a long stay in france you could now son you car on arrival and unsorn before returning to the uk?
Help please

Thanks

steve

1 post in 5 and a half years hmmmmmm.

The answer is no. Your car should be road legal in the country it is registered in when using it abroad. Whether they can or would check is another thing.

Deleting my "or would" comment isn't ideal. Agree they can now but the questions over whether they would still remains. I know there's a UK wide op going on at the moment to pull foreign registered cars which I applaud but not sure if France are being as vigilant.

Yes, you can un-sorn your car simply by re-taxing it. Technically, the car must be road legal in the UK in order to be legal in France, so that means you have to keep it taxed, MOT'd and insured.

In reality, all the French police are going to be interested in is your insurance and licence. I've got a british car in France and it's taxed as I'll be returning to the UK in a few months. I'd quite happily drive an untaxed car over here though with no worries at all.

Its a saving of just 50 quid, but why give to the uk if I'm not here? it like paying for a TV licence without Top Gear!!

I've lived abroad a few times. Never taxed cars once they've run out.

Not having UK VED in France, is not an offence in France. Having a car SORNed and not used on UK roads, is obviously not an offence.

I would not pay UK VED if the car was not being used on UK roads.

Not true, you're trying to be clever through pedantry and failing miserably.
