So, ignoring any comments about helping your ex out...

My ex apparently never got her car tax reminder, promptly forgot and then realised today. It was due on the 28th March. She had me find her V5 (I know, really) and apply for it online.

What I can't tell is how to pay for the missing period of tax. The online / DD says it starts today which is fine. But will she get a fine through the post?

Due 28th day of a 31 day momth?

Don't think so. It will end 31st March & new start 1st April.

I don't see a fine being issued for a few hours.

So she taxes it from 1st April, sits back, and crosses her fingers that they won't notice the missing month.

What's the likely penalty if they do notice? Can't seem to find it on gov.uk

If you're lucky, £80 plus the missing month.

They will send you a nice letter letting you know if they realise which they probably will.

Which if the reminder wasn't received might also not be received, or might have already been sent and not received, oh dear. What's the trigger point for an automatic fine from the DVLA? 1 month?

A month's the absolute minimum - on Tuesday, the OP could have taxed it to cover March.

Just find the correct number to call up and say you'll pay imediately; I missed one once and it was only a few pounds penalty for about six weeks late iirc.

Thanks, I did not know about that... add a text or email reminder service and I will believe in citizen orientated govt services... wink

Is the V5 registered to her current address?
