Thank you to the very kind gentleman of Devon & Cornwall Police in the marked Volvo today who seeing that our C5 estate had broken down in a precarious part of the A30 / M5 junction approach at Exeter stopped behind us and came to help. Our car was fine after a minute ecu reset and we were soon on our way with the Volvo giving us some cover to get as back out into the flow of busy traffic. As I had my two young children on board I was especially grateful for the assistance - incredibly we'd only been stopped for about 10 seconds when he appeared ! Thank You very much.
The C5 engine management sometimes decides to shut the engine down - which is annoying to put in mildly, turns out it was slightly low on oil. Turn the ignition off, give it about a minute and the ecu reboots then you start up and drive away. I was on a rare section of the road with no hard shoulder and was half on / half off the culvert sticking out into lane 1 so it was a bit scary to say the least. Why always "The Children" ?? gus ? If you have any you don't need to ask the question, if you don't you probably wouldn't understand.

Two kids safely grown & brought up properly thank you.Nowadays some people expect the world to revolve around kids & nothing else. Your car played up irrespective of kids being on board.
If your ECU decided to reset (again) I would say you were a bit irresposible taking your kids out in the car in the first place if it was liable to cut out willy nilly.

Gus I'm very pleased for you and hope to be in the same position myself someday.Nowadays some people expect the world to revolve around kids & nothing else. Your car played up irrespective of kids being on board.

Not sure whether you're being pedantic or just suffering from boredom but I take your point.
My kids are, I'm sure like you and yours, very dear to me especially due to some extenuating circumstances and the very real possibility that I wouldn't get to see them again, let's just say that they live with me now after a long absence. If you re-read my first post I said that " As I had my two young children on board I was especially grateful for the assistance. " Had I been on my own I wouldn't have been particularly bothered but as they were there I was.
' If your ECU decided to reset (again) I would say you were a bit irresponsible taking your kids out in the car in the first place if it was liable to cut out willy nilly. ' - Well I'd have to agree with you with the benefit of future foresight or indeed it happening in a future tense however the car was borrowed and I wasn't aware that this would happen. Most of my vehicles pre-date engine management !

Glad you got home safely and well done to the BiB for helping out. Sounds like he was a lot more helpful than the comments you received from the all knowing PH brigade.
+1
Glad to hear all are safe and well!
As for Gus: He's trying to make out that he's the ultimate, perfect parent and yet strangely enough, apparently if he was in the same situation he wouldn't even consider being concerned for the welfare of his children! - Glad he's not My Dad!
A brief email to Office of Chief Constable, mentioning date time and location would be appropriate way to respond.

Is it designed to do that or is it some kind of fault? You speak as though you are familiar with these engine shut downs? Frankly, I wouldn't drive or own a car if I knew it behaved like that.As for the police's assistance, they were just doing their job. Unless they were on their way to a more pressing incident I'd expect them to stop behind you and give it the full array of blue lights, especially in such a precarious spot. Anything less would be pretty irresponsible of them, and I see it almost daily on the A30 (which is motorway in everything but it's lack of hard shoulder). A quick thank you email never hurts though.
