Tracing a number

Hi - need a spot of help from any BIBs - if it's possible.
A foreign friend went missing in another country last year. He had a good job, wife, family, etc, no reason for him to do a runner - so everyone has thought the worst. But a UK phone number has recently cropped up, and it might mean he is in the UK. The other country's police force would have to go through months of red tape to be able to start a search over here, or get the UK police involved in the search.
Therefore, if anyone can let me know how to trace the owner/address of a land line number, it would save a load of lost time trying to find a lost person.

The STD code and first two digits can normally narrow it down to a relatively small area.

No, not if it's foreign and already been reported over there. Believe me, the delays in trying to get it are silly.

You will not be able to get help from any Bib on this board as they will have to go throught the RIPA application to get the number checked out. That involves authorisation from at least a Superintendant or higher rank. It is also subject to DATA protection. Your best bet is to go to C.A.B and ask them how you could get the information legally. Either thatr or ask BT themselves how to go about it.

Will tell you which company owns the number (It might not be BT) but as mentioned before Data Protection Act... If it's not ex directory you might beable to find it on the elctrol roll disc thing...

BT's ADSLCHECKER site would tell you which exchange the number is connected from. In a large city that MIGHT help narrow things down when trying to get to the final account holder via electoral roll or whatever.
I did hear a rumour about a reverse checking database, as they have in the US, but don't remember seeing one yet.
