Friend drove past a police car the other day, 30 mins later they called at their house saying that as they drove past it flagged up the tax ran out in October last year. The police lost the car on a busy roundabout so called at their address 15 mins later. As the car was parked up on private land at this point they said they couldn't seize the vehicle but filled in some DVLA form and said the DVLA would be in touch and would probably back charge the tax and the the police would have no further involvement.

Is there likely to be some sort of fine as well with this?

A "friend" of mine was similarly inconvenienced recently.

Your friend should (a) tax the car right now; (b) ring the DVLA right now, explain the situation, and pay the back tax (ie the RFL from the date his last tax disc expired to the date the new tax starts) over the phone.

The DVLA will then get round to sending a letter offering an out of court settlement deal, non-acceptance of which will result in prosecution. The tariff is here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...
but basically it is £30 plus 1.5 times the unpaid back tax.

If your friend can get very fast and pay the back tax before the DVLA wakes up, your friend may find that the settlement figure (after a couple of rounds of correspondence) ends up at £30 plus a month or so, rather than £30 plus 7 months or so.

Good luck. Make a note of the name and dept of everyone spoken to and send letters by special delivery.

We purchased a minibus from a dealer last October they never told us it wasn't taxed and I never realised it hadn't been taxed.
About 6 weeks ago got a letter informing us it wasn't taxed and charged us for the missing tax period and no fine.

Apparently it wasn't ANPR but they were parked up using the DVLA website entering in vehicle details of passing cars.

To be fair, I would rather they were being pro-active like this when nothing is going on rather than sitting in the station.

You purchased a vehicle, then drove around in it for seven months without thinking about tax ????? Don't believe you.
Did you insure it? did you make sure it had an MOT?
For a start the new tax rules came into force Oct 1st and there has been a zillion topics on the subject on PH.

I would rather they were proactive catching lunatic drivers than working as tax collectors for the incompetent oafs in the DVLA. This really sticks in my throat considering the standard of driving nowadays. This should be the priority, not road tax!

Include the cost with fuel, and a more comprehensive MOT test every 2 years, after the car is 5 years old.

Agree about fuel cost, but not the mot test, not every car passes when it's the years old, and some of the cars you get in, unless they fell apart and stopped working we would never see them for a test, one a year is spot on, out of interest what do you think should be put into the mot test?

Surely if you're a Police Officer you should know this?

My thoughts exactly. More than a whiff of BS about this thread.
