Anything that can be done to stop someone using a shotgun on their land on a Sunday?

Where we live is a small village in Surrey surrounded by fields/ farmland and someone has taken to using a shotgun each Sunday, usually starting from before 8 am, and today still going at 630pm.

It's very close to the houses (the noise is extremely loud).

Ok you can do what you want on private land but is there anything around public nuisance/noise on a Sunday that could be used to make them stop? (its every Sunday not a one off thing, and I think its only one person).

Call your Council and complain about noise nuisance.

It's what they are there for.

Are you sure it is a shotgun and not a crow scaring device?

Yes defintely not a crow scarer it's someone out enjoying his gun(s) .

Closest today has been other side of road/field around 250-300m approx.

Would you complain about the noise of a racetrack if you moved nearby to one?

I hope when someone has a word with the dastardly fellow he invites his mates around to shoot

move back to the town and enjoy the emergency services sirens instead

Nope that's not me, I grew up in the country and my folks live on a farm so I am used to organised shoots, this is a different sort of activity ie notwhat you'd expect around lots of houses/streets.

No, I'd be on the racetrack!
Would you like to have someone firing a shotgun most of the day at the end of your garden ?

I'd love to have a garden that would be, by your measurements, 250-300m long.

iirc you can't use a shotgun within 50m of public highways or property.

If the user has permission to be on the land he's shooting on then i suspect there's little that can legally be done.

Not true. There are many reasons why:

  • A shotgun certificate can be revoked
  • Other action might be taken due to noise nuisance by the council (regardless of the legality of the right to own the gun)
With guns come great responsibility.

If the owner has a massive pest problem and is using each Sunday to clear, then you are right, little could be down with regards to the certificate, but they might be advised to keep it to "working hours"?

If the owner is having a load of mates over, blasting crap out of targets and has lax control over the gun and the ammunition (is he present with it at all times, etc) then he may have some questions to answer.

We live in a village and are used to the sound of shotguns. A few years ago one of the farmers set up a clay pigeon range on his land. This resulted in multiple shots for pretty much most of Saturday and Sunday, close to the village. After a number of complaints (not from me I'd add - our house is at the other end of the village) they made the guy (a) move the range over to the other side of his land, away from the village, and (b) restrict the number of hours the guns were active. To be honest (a) was the only thing that needed to be done, you can hardly hear it now.

How soon after you moved in did the village become surrounded by fields and farmland?

unless his friends (if any are present) are fellow certificate owners by the way you do not need a SGC to be in possession of or for storing regular clay and game shotgun ammunition
