I've got an NIP in the post today saying I broke the 40 MPH limit but the van was on the other side of a dual carrigeway and I was headin away from it not towards, can camera vans get readings for traffic on the other side of a dual carrigeway moving away from them?.

Is that not made obvious by the NIP you hold.

just go to court and explain that you did not know that a speed camera van could get you on the other side of the road

Of course they can. I have many of times, Laser guns work with vehicles travelling to and from the gun. If the vehicle is travelling away it will state "- 43mph" the minus sign indicating the vehicle is travelling away.

Here you go.... 295m from a layby on the opposite carriageway, over the Armco and through a gap in the hedge... don't say you haven't been warned.... wink

I've requested their photographic evidence before I fill the forms out, I'm not wholly convinced they can get an accurate reading across 4 lanes of traffic, 2 of which are travelling in the opposite direction, I will then check if the equipment is ty E approved for motorcycles, if it is fair enough, if not would rather give the money to a solicitor than a camera partnership to be honest.

Put it down to experience.. is my advice...

Otherwise if you do end up in front of the magistrate they will still find you guilty, increase the points awarded and empty your wallet quite a bit further, plus you'd have paid for a solicitor ....

But your choice, good luck with whatever option you go with...

You can easily get an accurate readings across 4 lanes of traffic. You only need half a second to get a reading back. In fact the further the angle of the device is to your vehicle the more it works in your favour. By like 1 or 2 mph.

And yes the device is approved for motorcyclists.

My advice is just pay the fine, you'll only end up guilty in court with a higher fine and possibly more points!

I've requested the picture/video just in case but that was mainly because I thought their vans couldn't record traffic on the other side of the road etc.
To be fair I think your advice is pretty sound and I will just accept the fixed penalty And put it down to experience, hopefully won't put my insurance up too much next year!.

Yes the speed is recorded as + OR - **mph depending on if you are traveling towards or away from the gun
