Boy racers risk cars being seized
Police in Worthing say 'boy racers' could lose their vehicles
Irresponsible drivers and "boy racers" could lose their cars in a crackdown on anti-social driving at night.
Police in Worthing, West Sussex say residents regularly contact police and local councillors to complain about noisy stereos and speeding cars.
The number of incidents has been increasing and officers say residents' quality of life is being affected.
Drivers will be warned once but a second offence may end with the vehicle being seized, Sussex Police say.
The fear of pedestrian injury is real, said Sgt Peter Darkin.
"Some of the vehicles used by 'boy racers' in Worthing are owned by their parents," said a spokeswoman.
"They are not going to be too happy when they have to get the bus to work because their car has been seized."
The issue of boy racers was raised at the first meeting of the police local action team for Worthing.
In response town centre officers have been patrolling "hot spot" areas of Splash Point and Teville Gate and speaking to some of the drivers.
"This low-level approach has not worked effectively enough," said Sgt Peter Darkin.
"Residents have genuine concerns about the standard of driving in the town at night.

"With many people leaving the town's pubs and clubs on foot, the fear of a pedestrian injury is real."
Over the coming weeks police will be working with officers from the government's vehicle inspectorate, Vosa.
West Sussex environmental services will be brought in where cases involve noisy vehicles.
Police also say that where vehicles have been modified they will inform insurance companies and higher premiums may be incurred.

He takes every opportunity to report cars that to him appear to be going faster than he believs they should.
He also takes a great delight in reporting to the police any vehicles that appear to be modified.
What else does he get up to in his spare time i wonder?
These are the kinds of people who regularly call the cops and put in a complaint to get actions taken like SC has reported.
Its never as cut and dried as it first seems.

If "little Johnny" is the soul of discretion about his nocturnal activities I can imagine there could be a few embarrassed and very upset parents finding themselves without a car - they're going to feel very aggrieved.
Having said that what do you do with truly anti-social behaviour? Take away the means with which to do it - and if its the car "little Johnny" is doing it with then its the car!

I'm not sure confiscating things is the right way to go. It is a form of state theft and is not always going to be the right thing.
I'd be more in favour of taking away 'little johnny' for a couple of months behind bars - but I guess we have the backwards judicial system to consider (sigh).

Stealing decent citizens cars is criminal activity and the police involved should go to jail.
It is unlikely that the parents cars are causing the noise from the stereos and its that that should be dealt with. Jaywalking is a big problem in most towns and 70% of adults hit by cars are drunk. I cannot understand why the police who clearly know all this are not just taking steps to confiscate the amplifiers and prosecute the pedestrians who get hit for causing criminal damage. Simple really.
It seems to me that one of the very possible side-effects of declaring that 'your car will be taken from you' is that the Kevs will be far less likely to stop, and drive far more recklessly to evade capture in an attempt to hang onto thier possession.

As ever there are two side to every story. There are many of these young lads who modify their cars and are rightly proud of the workmanship they demonstrate, and will grow up and become good citizens. there are others wheter it is football cars drinking whatever hobby others enjoy will spoli it for others. The residents of Worthing have a right to a quality of life but so does everyone else including the people the police target.
Now once again on here we have the view that it is okay because we don't like them, for them to have the cars stolen by the state. You will never see noisey neighbours having their stereo gear confiscated or their barking dog put down, yet cars are okay. Why?
When are people on here going to wake up to the fact that there is a desire from goverment to get rid of cars, they support lunatic groups who share their views. So be it Caravanners, Maxi power boys, older drivers motorcyclists and the latest 4X4 drivers we allow groups to be victimised at our peril. When they come for two seater sports cars or second car owners who will support us?
The guys who cause trouble on the roads in Worthing should be educated as to why it is dangerous and how to modify their behaviour by the police, they would gain more respect from good treatment rather than the alienation stealing their car will generate.
We all know busy biddies who are jealous of what we have are we going to condone the type of state that gets its people top report on its own?

Problem with this will be the lack of discretion when reporting the 'misdemeanours'. I'm all for the Police breaking up groups of chavs using a residential street as a racetrack, and I'm sure the threat of confiscating their cars would be useful. However, can you see the logical progression to this: Police knock on your door, "I'm sorry, sir, we're getting complaints from your neighbours about your exhaust waking them up in the mornings and generally irritating them. You have a week to remove it, or we'll take your car."

...and they're no doubt just the sort of people who would gleefully sign-up to requests for camera vigilantes.
A possible solution to the anti social usage of modified cars, chavved up snotmobiles, whatever, would be simply to give them somewhere to GO!
Certainly theyd be more likely to use their cars in a more friendly fashion on the streets if they were given designated plots, such as any one of the number of abandoned airfields dotting the UK in which to carry out their burnouts, drag races, sound offs etc and get it outa their systems that way.
I can find no good reason for denying them such a facility and most would gladly pay for the useage and for the upkeep of "their" gathering places.
Instead we seem to be saddled with councils that are just bloody minded and dogmatic, using a police force that seems far too quick to implement use of their new powers to piss off even more impressionable youngsters by making threatening noises.
How hard can it be to sort this out? Or are we just not bothered cos "we can take their cars" and act like a pack of bastards in reverse to em?
