Police stop drivers in road safety campaign

Nearly 40 drivers have been caught breaking the law during a road safety campaign by police in Telford.
An operation was carried out in Telford town centre on Thursday by 15 officers who stopped cars for various reasons.

Four people were arrested and 34 people were found to be breaking various driving regulations during the day-long police operation.

Police say the campaign was to ensure road safety and urge drivers to check vehicles and documents before driving.

Officers stopped about 140 cars and arrested three people, two women and a man on suspicion of theft and one man was held on suspicion of possessing drugs.

Twenty motorists were found to be driving without tax and fourteen drivers face prosecution for motoring offences.

Police also issued ten fixed penalty notices.

Why don't the police carry out this kind of operation around some of the housing estates/shopping centres at the weekend/evening ? Rather than once again targeting the motorist, target the 'yoofs' and thugs that terorise people.

Why do you expect us to approve of and be glad to hear about *another* motorists ambush ?

Good.

They had an ANPR operation in Wycombe on Friday on the A40 Loudwater. Lots of bike cops sitting around waiting for the radio call. Trouble was the traffic the van was scanning was queueing and any self-respecting scrote would have spotted it and done a u-turn long before being scannerable ...

horses for courses...

This was a criminal use of motor vehicles operation. The kind of thing the police get complaints about all the time.

"Someone's going to get killed officer...come on..won't you lot do something"

Out of the 140 cars stopped....4 people were arrested...(and it wouldn't be for minor motoring offences..)

20 vehicles with no tax (you can bet no insurance)

14 other offences too....

These are the 'don't give a shit motorists' that share the roads with pistonheaders..
and YOU don't approve of police enforcement tactics against them..

I can get my head around the campaign against cameravans, but against this...

Then again...some people will never be happy..C'est la vie...

Whether a 18 year old scrote in a maxxed Corsa, a middle aged geezer in an old Ford Scorpio, an elderly grannie who has been on the sherry with her friends for lunch they're all potentially dangerous.

I agree there is probably a high concentration of 'naughtiness' on your average low-rent estate on a Fri/Sat night, but I think the Police also have to make it look like they're not victimising these kinds of people (Even if they deserve it - the complaints would have the cops up in front of the chief etc. etc.)

Any uninsured/taxed etc. driver needs catching.

I think we can be thankful it wasn't a speed campaign, nice to see the police interested in crime for a change. I expect a town centre was more for show than results (despite the results), as dodgy cars (drivers) tend to avoid such places. Nothing wrong with visible policing though - rather a refreshing change from the rats in the bushes !

Crime/disorder is the only thing the police are really interested in nowadays...

This can be measured in the fact that only 4% of my own force are engaged on Road Policing Duties...

As for dodgy cars avoiding town centres....the only place open on a night are kebab shops etc in the town. Scrotes don't have the sense you and I might have and don't see the 'danger' in visiting such populated venues..

Boy, I'm not complaining that the plod are catching scroats, but the fact that SC posts it up here and expects us to all say "how wonderful the plod are".

They target motorists because it's so, so easy, not because they are committing serious crimes.

When SC posts that they had groups of plod patrolling the local housing estates, the back roads with pubs at chucking out time or the train stations at midnight - and caught scroats for drugs/drunk and disorderly/theft/mugging etc then I'll have some confidence that they are doing something positive and something useful, but catching another scroat for no tax and no MOT, although good, is hardly praise worthy.

I posted it to highlight that not only speed enforcement is carried out by the police....

as for police doing the things you've listed...anti-social behaviour, drunk/disorderly....That goes on all the time, every hour, day in day out....

You've obviously little experience of what the police actually do day to day.....

As for dobbing people for no tax etc....I don't suppose you'll bleat to the police when your vehicle is hit by an uninsured/untaxed driver, will you? You'll just take it on the chin and buy another car/bike...
Yeah..right..

So where does this happen, where are you being pro-active rather than simply responding to calls from the public after the offences have been committed ?

More than you would think but I'm not a plod.

Yeah..right..

I've had two car trailers stolen recently, both reported to plod, nothing done to recover them but then again, what could you have done ? I had to replace them.

If I get hit by an insured driver who gives me a false name/address then yes, I'll have to just get on and buy another car/get it fixed. Some people are wan*ers and you need to catch them, so do what you have done above - but don't hold this up as a shining example of why we should think the plod are wonderful - you're doing your job, great, we all do that every day, you want a star or something ?

Doesn't sound like there was too much "road safety" involved there, more like a document checking day. Are you really going to get that many people causing major offences in a busy town centre?

I'm with StreetCop on this one. I think it's great and long over due that the Police are out in a highly visible pro-active role.

As SC points out 'You're damned if you do, damned if you don't'

Seems there's no pleaseing some people.

.... yeeeesss.... up to a point.

I'd agree that the laughably non-proactive behaviour of Cops is ridiculous ; and that the Police actually need to think about actually preventing crime rather than responding to it and expecting the public to stop it. "Fit Alarms" "Neighbourhood Watch" (By the way, PC Plod, why has your tax demand gone up 30% again ?)

I did rather like the London story about the posters that go up "Did you see this ...." "Have you seen this misper...." - someone put up a picture of a BiB with the caption "anyone seen one of these ?"

Problem is, these things are just PR - is it going to extend to the yob community, or is it just going to involve going out making a big fuss now and again for a good paper story ?

This is what happens here. Every so often a gang of plod go out. They execute a few warrants, go and find a few local crims. or drug users, and hype up their "crime" like they've solved the Great Train Robbery.

That's just witless ; it's pretending to do something for the sake of it.

Had a similar experience off J8 of the M25 heading into Surrey on the A217. On one of the rural dual carriageway sections with a 40mph limit caught sight of a camera van and two or three plodbikes looking like they were setting up for the day on the other carriageway, mental note made and anger contained. On the return journey a small road sign on a stand near the van was visible - as I sauntered past at 39 mph - it had a curious politically correct form of words but I took it to mean this was an ANPR operation. Fair enough if so, but can we believe what we read, and do they detect speed as well as read plates but forget to mention it?

Why not place advert or information notice or even TV ad. in paper pointing out what to check before driving - such as POWER und ensuring you understood your policy und who ist insured to drive your car if you are unable to for some reason.

We do not see such adverts in UK - und even though ist obvious to us as clued up - the numpty brigade clearly need this kind of advert.
This could also forewarn that you are checking und likely to be targetting this on patrol.

That was lucky -und what time was this? Mid day or midnight?

The 20 twazaks

The 14 ... not eating apples by any chance? Or were they not wearing seat belts or had blown bulb und no replacement in the car....

Absolutely, nobody thinks uninsured/untaxed drivers shoud be on the road, but I agree - why hype up what is basically their job anyway ?

I'll post up something I do next week, I'll find a pretty mundane aspect of my job that I'm sure you'd all think I ought to be doing and give it a bit of dazzle

Agreed, the 2 times I had reason to request police assistance the service has been attrocious and in-efficient beyond belief. My impression was that they couldn't be arsed, so why should I be impressed when police are doing what they're being paid?

I don't think the news release was to hype up anything...but to inform the ill-informed that the police don't just sit eating doughnuts and manning speed cameras....

Yes it's their job to deal with such things...it's also the job of other officers to deal with speeding matters..but that gets juices flowing..with complaints of 'why aren't they doing this and that'....well they are..

SC, I don't have a problem with you, I understand the need for traffic cops. BUT, would you not agree that our wonderful government has demoted you folks into the role of traffic wardens? Doesn't it frustrate you?
Half of the grief that has come your way in this thread is NOT because of you, but the perception that we are the worst criminals on the planet (maybe stray above the limit occasionally). But the fact that you are posting here must mean that you understand that we are NOT the enemy?
