love it! I love the way the sun turns out moments of inspired genius like this! almost makes me forgive it for the utter crap it puts out most other days... it does make a mockery of the system though, I mean - I assume the force will now throw the book at the offending copper, but somehow I bet they won't! I can see why after all, bubt in the interests of fairness, shirley they would? anyone want to open a book in it?
And I bet the true cost of evidence gathering on that hapless lass cost a feckload more than £10k.

Having said that I think the stunt just illustrates that a quick munch behind the wheel is no big deal.. we all do and will continue to do so just have to watch our mirrors a bit more now.

What everyone is missing is that probably the cop eating the doughnut was probably entirely in control of his vehicle..just as the woman who was eating the apple was. Sorry but I don't buy into this nasty nanny crap - banning certain potential distractions that look good politically while leaving others taboo. If this nonsense is not stamped upon, pretty soon we'll all have to be like Chinese taxis where the driver sits inside a steel and perspex screen, isolated from any potential contact with or distraction from the passengers. Oh... and the Shanghai ones come complete with a tea flask and snack holder

That's why there are so few traffic coppers and so many cameras..
There are plenty of non-traffic coppers, ie CID, to deal with the thieves, rapists, muggers and murderers....
Let traffic cops deal with traffic offences...or else very soon, there won't be any at all...

Back to the point..
thieves, rapists, muggers, murderers= dealt with by the relevant departments.
traffic related offences=dealt with by TRAFFIC/ROAD POLICE bobbies....
Pro-actively dealing with road safety, in it's various forms is very important. After all the most important role of a constable is the preservation/protection of life. Then comes the preservation/protection of property.

"pro-actively" stopping a driver from driving too fast because theres a million to one chance s/he might have an accident further down the road

Isn't the old way of "bobbies on the beat" a method of proactive policing?
Nobody can tell how many thefts, muggings, rapes and murders are prevented by this approach, which is why it's not done any more -- it doesn't contribute towards the clear-up rate targets. However, I do believe it's what people want. We'd much rather these things didn't happen in the first place than some CC get patted on the back for improving his 16% clear-up rate.
Similarly, an increase in trafpols who are out to catch dangerous drivers before they kill someone would be welcomed by everyone. But not those out to catch perpetrators of victimless crime. Just like we're not interested in beat bobbies catching people for thought crimes. Let's get back to reality!

Indeed. And the tea flask is often a used jar of instant coffee containing some very odd looking green stuff floating in cold water.
And then the cab driver falls asleep at about 2:30am, and you can't grab the wheel because there's perspex between you and him.
So you crash.
