Ok I work for a large manufacturing company who believe that overtime is compulsory
We work up 2 hours at the end of each shift plus they can and do call an 8 hours Saturday shift when they deem it necessary
We have been doing 2 most days for a while now with one Saturday per month on top
Last Wednesday they decided to call Saturday for this coming weekend and stated it's compulsory for everyone even if you have things planned booked and paid for
I have booked a Saturday night in a posh 'otel for me and the waife, plan is to have steady bimble over light lunch on the way then use the hotel facilities before nice meal drinks then beddie bys
Employer says I can't go and has even rung hotel today to enquire about cancellation policy
Obviously I am furious and have told my manager to tell HR from me to go and get fked
How much legitimate flak can they send my way?
To be honest I enjoy stirring it up and love to push their boundaries
Can they do owt other than write it up in my employee record?

1.Just had a meeting with HR been told I could loose my job if I don't attend worko n Saturday

I asked for it in writing and was told noi asked for the refusali n writing

Guess what she said no

Sadly guy with kids has given in

2.
Ok well it's been a bit of a day

going toe to toe with HR and not backing down

the guy who's sons b'day party is on Saturday went in after me the c units told him to get his wife to video it and he can watch it later

He agreed to work, He told me later he had no option as he has 3 kids and bills to pay

I on the other hand am in a different boat, I have zero debt a wife with a very good salary, so we just have normal expenses to pay out and no major worries

I will be employed elsewhere soon

I may be at work on sat because if I don't one of the other lads will be sweating in my place

Today they're calling me "Big Balls"

Regardless of what your contract says it doesn't sound like reasonable behaviour on the part of the employer. The best option is to look for employment elsewhere.

Good job you were not getting married on the Saturday, is the job something specific that needs to be finished or can the work be caught up during the week ?

sounds entirely made up
or at least an incredibly prejudiced account of what ever has gone on.

Sounds exactly like my dads last employer a few years ago TBH.
They seriously tried to amend T&Cs so that their factory workers had to be available for overtime 24 x 7 (they work Mon-Fri)
Both being unavailable for work at 4 hours notice, or not answering your phone if called at the weekend were both to be disciplinary offences.

And people wonder why unions still exist...

OP

On average how many hours do you work each week, including the overtime? I wonder if you're getting close to breaching the 48 hour rule.

What's the worst flak the boss could send your way?

Well if you've been working there less than 2 years they can fire you for pretty much any reason as long as it's not based on race, gender, religion or sexuality.

If you've been there over two years they could effectively "manage you out the door" by setting very tight targets / parameters to work to

This.

My brother in law collapsed in the shower and had to be rushed into hospital. At the time he worked for a well known supermarket. While he was still in his hospital bed his boss called and wanted to know when he would be back in worked. He was warned that if he was not back in a couple of days time he would be would receive a formal warning as he'd already had time off that year (He sprained his ankle at work). His doctor told him he needed to take at least a week off work in leaving hospital, but recommended two. Work continued to call him trying to get him back but he took a week off. He received a formal warning and subsequently left. He now works for Waitrose who treat staff properly.

So many questions.

What does he want to do? (this is really the most important question)
How long has he worked there?
Has he complained about this to his boss?
ETA _ has he got house insurance?

If he's a new member I believe SPL is hidden for first couple of weeks, he may have to PM a mod, to get access.

Thank heaven for Trade Unions. As long as there are disgusting employers like this there will always be the need for them.

No doubt this particular workplace does not have a Union and the employer has done all they can to obstruct Union recognition.

Decent employers who treat staff fairly in accordance with law and agreements have nothing to fear from Trade Unions.

Every worker should be in a Union.
