Car park scrape
Discussion
Hi folks, advice please. My sister scraped her car coming out of a space in a car park. She stopped and checked for damage and apparently a slight scratch on hers and no damage to the other car. No people involved, recorded on CCTV is her stopping and checking. She has then driven off. Some one has left her number on screen of other car and now the police want to come round to have to sort some forms out. I know she should have left her details but what is the likely outcome of this?
Thanks
Thanks
What sort of car park ? If its private, then isn't it a civil matter and nowt to do with the BiB ?
I mention this because my wife's car was damaged in a car park a few years ago. Similar to your sister's experience, someone left a note giving reg and make / model details.
We visited the local nick and we're politely told that there was nothing they could do as the car park was outside of their jurisdiction.

Once again, see the first sentence of my previous post BUT.....if that's the case then surely the police would tell you to piss off if you tell them someone's burgled your house; i.e. it's private property so we don't wanna know?
Easy centurion, your post wasn't even there when I started typing a reply.
I am not a legal expert either, I was merely recounting (factually) an experience from a few years back.
Just imagine if the shoe was on the other foot and someone else had to leave details because the person who damaged your car hadn't bothered (hypothetical point). You'd be peeved and want your car sorted and properly as well, first port of call would obviously be the local Police and press to get a solution.
Damage has been caused so she should have stopped long enough to give details to any person with cause to require them regardless of is any damage caused was to her vehicle or another persons.
Fail to stop for a damage only RTC is non arrestable so they will want to fill in a form called a TA/1 (or TA/1a) Give her a producer if need be, take down an account from her and then pass the details to the other party and send the form off to the prople who will decide if there is anything worth reporting for.
Technically.... The fact she stopped, and hopefully long enough to give details to any person requiring them then she is in the clear but she must attend a police station within 24 hrs to report the incident. If she did not then she has failed to stop or report a damage only accident.
1 point worth noting though if i remember what i was taught correctly... the roads around the parking bays are covered under the road traffic act, but the bays themselves are not.

Edited to add:-
Carparks are covered under the road traffic act as they have public access.

Will depend on whether Police consider on enquiry and in possession of all the facts whether where it happened is a "public place" i.e. open and used by all without any restictions.
If a public place then if accident occurs which causes damage to any OTHER vehicle or property obligation on driver to STOP.
Stated there was no damage to the other vehicle.(May have looked Ok but whats underneath/inside) Obligation to do anything ends.Damage to own vehicle doesn't count.
Had there been damage to the OTHER vehicle then there is obligation in addition to stopping to give drivers/owners/vehicle details to any person having reasonable grounds for requiring. No one present so then should be reported as soon as reasonably practicable and in any case within 24 hours to Police. Offence not to do so.
Problem I think you will find is that there NOW is damage to the other vehicle so could be in the doo doo.

I asked what kind of car park in my first post because when we had our dink the police declined to be involved. This was an unmade car park in the New Forest near Lyndhurst.
It makes sense what has been posted above and it seems that maybe I should have 'pushed' for their involvement. Hey, I was a lot younger and greener then. You live and learn.
I hope that its not the case for your sister that some bogus claim is being made against her - like DVD says, damage that wasn't caused by her etc etc.
