My lodger is a copper in that station. I asked him about that story a few weeks ago.

Sounds like the victim was hanging on to the toilet and a copper stamped on his fingers while trying to drag him out, crimping them off.

Maybe if the police are trying to restrain you. Let them and don't resist.

Personally I'm OK with stamping the fingers off someone already locked up being seen as excessive.

I now agree if that's what happened. That's pretty awful. I thought at first he must have just been hanging on and they were pulling him, but then again I suppose that wouldn't cut the ends of your fingers off. Maybe they need to redesign the toilet bowl!

Well if you are going to crimp one off the toilet bowl would be the place to do it. wink

I wouldn't say the toilet bowl is at fault here.

Comply or face the consequences?

I'm rarely one to stand up for the police believing they have a tendency to go after the low hanging fruit as it's easier, but that's not surprising when they have to deal with idiots like this one day in day out, wtf was he doing with a foot in the toilet in the first place and what was he hoping to achieve resisting being taken out of the cell, if it was Syria and he was going to get his hands chopped off for theft or something fair enough fight back, but let's be honest the worst case scenario was he was off to court or questioning.

There appears to have been excessive force used, but it wouldn't have happened at all if he had just behaved normally.

Maybe he had mental health issues?
Maybe he was scared? I can't imagine being locked in a cell to be the most pleasant place to be so it's easy to see why he might have been.

Only thing I cant understand is why were they trying to get him OUT of the cell. Thats where they are trying to get you to 99.9% of the time

You do understand the difference between a police cell, and prison, don't you? The baddies don't actually live in the police cells. They HAVE to come out in the end.

And (although I only have a BiB's opinion on this) the victim is a proper P.O.S. Not that it makes it all alright, but my interpretation of what I was told is that he's got history of fighting with plod.

Violent & guilty? ie the sort of people plod avoid to harass the innocent.

I'll await for the outcome of the investigation.

I'm struggling to visualise how blunt force can cause such an injury. I would assume every aspect of a cell is designed to minimise the risk to the detainee so would think the toilet won't have any sharp edges.

Violent offenders make up the largest proportion of those in prison.

Who gathers the evidence for those prosecutions and deals with the most violent people in society? Certainly not you.

Not sure if you're referring to your co-workers or the prisoners here. hehe

In this case it could be the former!
