A mother sped along the A11 at 107mph with young children in the car, a court heard yesterday.
Nicola West, 38, of Earlham Road, Norwich, was given six points to add to the three on her licence and ordered to pay a fine of £100 and £45 costs. She was told by Thetford magistrates that she was lucky not to be disqualified.
Josephine Jones, prosecuting, said West was stopped on the A11 at Besthorpe, near Attleborough, on October 9. She said: "Her speed was found to be 107 miles an hour - 37 over the limit. Her reply after caution was: 'I didn't know what speed I was doing. My passenger was feeling sick' . On being told she would be reported, she said: 'I am very sorry but there are extenuating circumstances'."
West, who teaches dance and drama part-time in Dereham, apologised and said her daughter was in the car, along with two friends' children. She said: "I don't speed as a general rule. It is not something I generally do. I had been to Royston with three little girls. On the way back, one of them was feeling sick. We had already stopped at Thetford and she had been very sick. She wanted to get to her mum. She was crying her eyes out."
She added: "I apologise to the families of the other children . . . I felt upset because I had let the other mummies down. If they had been doing that speed with my daughter in the car, I would be very upset."
She added that she had not had the car, a new Renault Megane, for long and had not got used to how fast it went.
Chairman of the bench Francis Crawley told her she would normally be disqualified but had been let off due to her voluntary work and the fact that she gave lifts to other people's children.
He said: "This is a horrendous speed. We doubled our normal fine because there were children in the car, which makes it much more serious. You admitted there was a lack of concentration because you had a sick child in the car."

...whereas if you drive a sports car / are a young(-ish) man, etc., then you can expect no leniency at all.
And there was I under the misguided assumption that the UK legal process was outside of the usual prejudices and biases that are prevalent in the rest of society...Oops!
