As some may remember I recently received a PC30 for parking with gay abandon on zig zags on a quiet road late at night for 2 minutes

I sent my licence off for summary decoration by the governments' finest. I sent the tax (sorry, fine) off before Christmas.

On the scrap of paper they left me in lieu of licence it says I should get my replacement licence back within 6 weeks of paying the fine (ie now). If it doesn't show up I have to "write them a letter"

1. presumably the DVLA being their usual efficient self, it is always the tail end of the 6 weeks?

2. any other way of getting at them? don't fancy the chances of a letter succeeding any time soon.

I need the damn thing back for when I get my insurance in a few weeks, no point in shopping around and then adding on my conviction (nice word) 2 weeks later.

It can take up to 2 months...normally about 2-3 weeks...

Must say though mate....parking on zig zags at ANY time is just plain 'asking for it'. I mean..if you had parked several feet away you'd have only got a non-endorsable fixed penalty..(ie: £30 fine/NO POINTS)..and in reality may not have even got that...

Drive through shops...that's what Britain needs...Then people wont have to park within 12 feet of the door...

Don't want to drag it all up again, but it really was in the middle of nowhere. In my defence I failed to notice the crossing, I was about 2 car lengths from the the crossing proper, parked up after it on the left, so in no way obstructing anybody's field of vision or path. The following day there were big lorries parked either side of the crossing for maintenance (actually on zig zags) while the crossing was still in use.

I don't deny I did wrong, but I would have thought discretion would have applied in this case. If it had been pointed out to me by the BiB I sure as hell wouldn't have done it again. Not really any need to push up my insurance premiums for the next 5 years, who does that benefit?

Perhaps you're right mate....discretion might have been the best course of action...

Depends on the time of night....

However, I've never shown discretion to a zig zag abuser...but never really seen one abused in the dead of night....

You've probably kicked yourself a thousand times for not seeing the zig zags when you parked, and again when you got out of the car etc etc...

Perhaps, because our licenses spend so much time at the DVLA now, they've decided to keep them to save you posting it back to them next time

About 10ish. Tired, on way back from gig. Stopped, went into offy, bought 4-pack, came out, saw BiB sniffing round car. Time parked - 2 minutes maybe? I was pretty sure I'd stopped on double yellows but hadn't checked. Of course if I'd realised I was still on the zig zags I would never half parked there....

Of course, given that they must have seen me park up, they could always just have come over and told me to shift it sharpish...

Yes and yes. What's getting to me at the moment is that the clock hasn't even started ticking on the points coming off yet because the DVLA haven't pulled their fingers out!! Maybe if I never get it back then the points'll never appear?

Why do you need your licence for getting insurance? If they ask for it then you show the slip of paper and tell them about the conviction, if they do not ask to see it then just tell them about the conviction.

Edited to add:

It does not matter if you get it back or not, the points will be on the record in the central database.

The clock starts from date of conviciton AFAIK, so no worries on that score.

Isn't it the date of the offence PdV6 that the clock starts ticking?

Otherwise if it was the date of conviction if you were on 9 points and close to dropping three off then you could adjourn proceedings and escape a ban. No. They are not going to allow that are they?

Hang on a minute - have I actually got the points yet? I don't think so, it's only because I did some research that I know what I have been done for specifically (PC30) - so how could I have told my insurance company.

Please tell me NOW if I need to inform my insurance yet - I had assumed that they only apply from when I get my licence back, as I haven't been told officially what points/conviction I am getting.

I need the licence back because, assuming the above is true, I want to get quotes based on a PC30, not based on a clean licence and then 2 weeks late ringing them and adding the conviction which doubles my premium.

Your paperwork from them that be indicates that you were done PC30 - infringement of Ped Crossing Regs and not TS?? fail to conform.

PC30 attracts 3 penalty points and the only way that you would not get these would be by the decision of a Magistrate because of some strange feature of the case in their opinion.

By what you say and the time sequence is that you were dealt with under FP rules (no Court) so its 3 points on your Licence dated from date of your offence.

Open up a dialogue with your Insurance Company you may be pleasantly surprised, more so if a long standing customer and I feel sure they will appreciate honesty.

Thanks for the help on this guys.

I dug out some numbers for the Justices' Chief Executive, but it was a robot woman menu - after 15 minutes' playing, no way to get to a human being to ask what was going on PO Box address as well, so no way of actually getting hold of them. Infuriating.

As it happened it turned up the next day (always thought they reprinted your licence, didn't realise it took 6 weeks to scribble a date and "PC30" on the paper counterpart - they could have left me with the photocard too!)
