Hi All
Car has been off road since last October and is SORNed. Now Insured and MOT booked for Friday morning. Just want to check its ok to drive the car to the garage, or do I need to trailer it there and back? Assuming it passes, it'll be taxed Friday afternoon.

I assume this is ok, but would just like confirmation. Thanks

He is correct but do you honestly think if he wasn't and you got stopped by the police they would accept that 'a bloke off the internet said it was ok' as an excuse? If it's a legal question I think I'd use Google next time and confirm it., it's near the bottom...

You can still be 'done' for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, so it would be good if the car had at least a sporting chance of passing the testsmile

It is legal how ever you can still get done if pulled over by the police, things like bald tyres lights not working ect. It's your responsibility to make sure the car is roadworthy when ever you drive it.

But who is going to try and MOT a vehicle if it is that obviously unroadworthy?

That's a stupid question plenty of people drive unroadworthy cars to and from mots. Not everyone has car knowledge

Someone who wants to be sure there are no deal breakers before you start spending money. If you have a £500 car and the tester might say "sorry mate, that airbag/brakes light is a £600 repair" then it's going to be tempting to put it through the test and find out how bad it is BEFORE you spend £200 on a set of new tyres to replace the honestly-I thought-they-were-still-legal-officer ones.

I believe that tyres and lights are two of the most common failure items, and they're hardly invisible! So the answer to your question is; "quite a lot of people".

If everyone knew about cars a knew how to check them and in the perfect world every road user kept their cars roadworthy it would soon make the mot test redundant.

Took my car back to the MOT place last Saturday which was over 20 miles away, simply phoned them up beforehand and the guy took down my numberplate and name. On the way back there was a police car behind me so assumed I was going to get pulled as had no MOT or roadtax but nothing happened! Was rather disappointed tbh.

I have known people book a mot that they are never going to attend just so the can drive the car back from where ever they have bought it from, one bought a car all the way in Scotland and drove it all the way back to hampshire

Don't forget that you have to take a direct route and not take the piss with it being far away!

Stop repeating this made-up drivel!

I have driven scores of cars, without registration plates, from Southampton and Tilbury, to Sheffield and beyond, perfectly legally and taking whichever route that I choose. On the rare instances where I have spoken to police officers they have known very well that they have no say whatsoever in where or how.

That's because there are no stipulations in the relevant legislation about the location of the testing station or the route used to reach it. However you might well be asked some questions if, for example, you lived in London, booked the MOT with your favoured tester in Milton Keynes, but decided to visit a friend in Eastbourne for lunch 'en route'.

The Scotland to Hampshire example quoted earlier is unlikely to have involved going in totally the opposite direction. I haven't been that far. My longest to date is from Merseyside to Kent.

Sorry chaps I forgot the parrot.

I thought if we were going to do the same thread that we'd done a billion times before it needed the same level of disinformation to liven it up a bit.

I mean it's not like the info that the op was after is easy to find with a Google search now is it?

Anyway I've been bad. Sorry.
