Hi guys

Couple of old threads out there but nothing conclusive.

Been seeing a fairly low key Police CCTV van regularly parked up in the same spot and wondering what the deal is.

Its a small van like a two seated combi van as opposed to a transit. Silver with "CCTV" written on the back and "Police" on the front. No windows on the sides or rear and no mast on top for a camera.

Parks among parked cars 50 yards or so down from a fixed speed camera.

Anyone know the dealio with these?

Parked cars and positioning mean its view for catching motorists is quite restricted. The road its in doesn't really have any crime issues. There is a school and a small hospital and that's it really.

I've never seen a mobile speed trap on the same road as a fixed camera but perhaps others have?

When I was a Special, we'd go out in the cctv van a fair bit but it was rarely used as such. From what you have described, it doesn't sound like it's set up for speed monitoring.

Just a strange part of town for a police or CCTV presence

Wondered if it represented a low key approach to mobile speed cameras that had not been well publicised

on the a24 they often sit next to the fixed camera, ( people know the fixed are there and slow at the last minute, the mobile camera can capture them as they round the corner 100 yards away.

are they full-on camera vans though?

this wasn't marked up as a camera van it was a small combi van with limited markings, no windows etc

is this a shift towards unmarked camera vans

Round our area where they have (supposedly) switched off some of the static cameras, they say they will now cover those areas with mobile unit

I used to see similar, or they'd be around the corner just after the camera when everyone has gone back to the natural speed of the road.

Could it be an ANPR unit of some kind?

We have them regularly in Manchester sat between parked cars on non-major roads just waiting. Usually on roads which get a bit of traffic by locals using it as rat runs.

Thinking outside of the box idea perhaps this particular CCTV operator is on the job so to speak sperm ... perhaps upload a few pics of the van and let his wife/girlfriend decide punch

I've seen them quite a few times its anpr and further on somewhere the police are waiting to get offenders. Many I've seen are unmarked.
