Do average speed cameras require any specific signage denoting that they are *average* speed cameras?

There is a large stretch of the A40 west of London (circa 13 miles) which is due to go live with around 10 forward facing specs cameras on the first of September. Given the cameras have physically been in place for around 2 months, although they're not actually live yet, most drivers seem to think they are the equivalent of a fixed camera.

Is there any requirement for notification to go up either via fixed or temporary signage for average speed cameras?

Currently, I don't think the ticket issuing office would be able to keep up with PCNs if the cameras were live...

Doing 40mph on a 3 lane road for 13 miles will be tedious in the extreme, esp. on a bike.

Never mind, now the Police will have less need to have a presence on the road to check speeding. This will leave more room for texting, watching films on ipads resting on the steering wheel, etc.

It's a fking disgrace that these things have been put up. I am amazed that there is not more of a PH outcry. Huge amount of dangerous extra road funiture, journey time for me will be doubled as I trundle along an empty motorway late a night after a late shift. Waste of money, they should be repairign the road, making the driving test harder and stop uninsured, unsafe cars. People eating, texting, reading pages from the Koran or some business report, putting make-up on, driving at 25 mph in the outside lane when the two inside lanes are empty.

Speed (safety) cameras of any type don't need any signage.

After your post I took a look at dashcam video footage I had recorded along the A614 where these average speed cameras had been installed and noticed that some signs did indeed say 'average speed camera' or words to that effect, whilst in the other direction further down the road they just showed a speed camera sign, so any less enlightened motorists wouldn't have been aware of the subtle differences till they received a fine from the 'safety camera partnership'. I don't think this lack of proper signs is correct and may result in major refunds being issued.

I happen to think the average speed cameras are the way forward to making roads safer, but only if the speed limits imposed are realistic, and the average motorist is properly advised that these cameras are in operation.

Average rant. 5 out of 10. Needs more "why don't you go and catch some burglars".

No point unless you live in an even-numbered house, they don't even bother trying otherwise.

No, I disagree. I think he is coming along quite nicely.

To be fair, the Koran reference does score some bonus ranty points, so on a re-mark I will go up to 6.5 or maybe even 7 out of 10.

At least the rant has resulted in some responses!! I have seen all the things mentioned in the post on my ride/drive into work along the A40. I thought that PH could still be a forum of freedom, but it seems not! Perhaps we should re introduce the guy with the red flag walking ahead of the car. We could give the flag carrying jobs to the new wave of economic migrates and kill two birds with one stone!!

All this and "economic migrates" too! I was waaaaay too harsh. This is heading for an 8 out of 10, and maybe even a 9.

Driving as fast as I like wherever I like is a fundamental human right innit! We fought Hitler for that. Mind you, he did invent autobahns. Some sensible ideas about foreigners, too. Blah, blah, contd page 97.

Often you see SPECS cameras signed "not in use" in preparation for roadworks. Could they still get you for exceeding the NSL?

Not sure if serious! Which part of "national speed limit" are you struggling to understand?

I was wondering which part of "not in use" they were struggling with!

I never said that I want to drive as fast as I like anywhere. I just think that it is a ridiculous wast of time and money installing these bloody cameras, it will make no deference to the accident rate and will just inconvenience thousands of people. The red flag comment was a joke, although given that the red flag job is very labour intensive, it would give a lot migrants work!! Even you can only employ so many of them carrying your briefs!!!!

I'll rephrase. Can SPECS camera evidence be used to prosecute people averaging over the limit when signed "not in use"?

ie does the TRO authorising their use to enforce a (say) 50mph limit during roadworks allow for NSL enforcement at other times? Just because some workmen have put up or "not in use" signs that might not mean the cameras are inactive, but people otherwise doing 80-ish seem to slow down to 70 for them anyway.

Not in use might be the clue here. They won't be turned on.

I don't know...it worked here:
A77 speed cameras cut deaths by 46%

Oh look, they have reduced speeds here too:
A9 average speed cameras 'have reduced speeding'

Traffic flows improved here:
SPECS average speed camera scheme delivers real benefits in Nottinghamshire

Seems like your dislike of the use of the systems has created your mistaken claim. Perhaps you should look again but this time with less of a preconceived conclusion.
