This is under the heading of questions you always wanted to ask but worried about appearing thick.

A glass claim can cost many hundreds of pounds (thousands potentially). So far it doesn't affect NCB, or is that changing?

I filled in an online quote recently which DID ask about glass claims in the last 5 years (can't recall which company) but they were the only one out of dozens.

It's because historically windscreen claims were always "Free" (No excess to pay) and did not affect your no claims bonus.

Insurers gradually introduced excesses but have held off affecting no claims bonus for windscreen claims as if one introduced it, the rest of the market would not and the Insurer would lose a significant amount of their customers for a type of claim which has a very very small impact on their claims figures.

The closest that has happened is Swift Cover have introduced that you do not earn any more no claims bonus for the year you made a windscreen claim with them. The rest of the market did not copy them

So it's market driven more than "safety" you reckon?

I was thinking that the reasoning may have been to encourage people to change screens which affected vision or were likely to shatter through damage. However that would infer some nobility on insurance companies.....

Part of the reason I'm asking is my screen has some accumulated damage, but I've been told the screen surround is obsolete and costs £300 on top of whatever the glass costs (£200-ish?)....car is worth about a grand!

Although it will not affect your bonus you should declare it as a claim to any new insurer and with the complex calculations insurers use these days to reach a final premium it may well affect the quote you get.

The simple answer is that they just don't. It occasionally gets reviewed not least with glass getting more expensive on cars. The only change though seems to be an increase in excess.

I'm on my second glass claim in three months. Thanks Lincolnshire Highways. wavey Thanks for laying a st load of chips down on a road, causing a big dust storm that has been reported as being very dangerous (and your fault), and thanks for not sweeping up the loose chips correctly. smile

I've declared these on all of my insurance searches as mine is up next week. Hasn't affected me, but at least I'm being truthful.

That's just an absurd thing to say...

He can't right up behind all other drivers, only the one in front at any one time.

Yes, LV= increased my excess from £75 to £125 after a windscreen claim.

They won't alter an individual's glass excess for a claim in a standard policy. Either the excess is a flat £125 for all, or you're confusing your damage excess with glass excess which are often different.

no idea why I am on my 3rd the new ones dont seem to like stone's flying at them as much as the original one frown

Had one fitted and within 24 hours it was knackered with two stone hits which then started cracking out further.

The latest one is a tiny dink on the edge of the screen which has now sprouted a 12" crack down the screen

I think my issue is that my trip to work has to pass through so many roadworks and there is so much crap on the road surface.

Oh give me some credit. Here is a quote from LV= which I got online just now for my car (but using my wife's details) without mentioning a previous glass claim. nb the standard excess has risen from £75 when I renewed last December to £90 now.

And here's the £125 endorsement on my policy having declared a previous windscreen claim.
.

Everything else is exactly the same, and I'm pretty sure they aren't allowed to set a bigger excess for men.

Maybe not the same, but my renewal with my current insurer has come through with a higher glass replacement excess. They want £125 too.

I'm going with someone else who charges £75 (this isn't the only reason I'm changing).

LV do seem to change their xs's very much dependant on the car rather than the driver. You sure it's not that?

Is it odd to feel guilty about claiming for glass? Unless the screen is sitting in my lap I always do!

Um - very similar but no, not identical; latter has no sunroof. (I was wary of raising a red flag against my reg).
I'll see what happens when I renew next time. I was pretty sure adding the glass claim increased the excess but there was a time gap between the two quotes that spanned new year; that might have been a general increase anyway but it was rather a big jump.
