Quick question for our resident BiB members, first a bit of back story.

Mother in Law has super mega Alzheimer's, basically can't function in the world at all. Lives with husband who refuses to put her into care, let's not get into that.

Last night, she did an escapee act and went missing. Phoned 101 and after over 35 minutes on hold decided a 999 call was in order. She requires various meds (diabetes, etc), was wearing pyjamas and slippers, it was soon going to get dark and cold and so she was in a pretty risky situation.

Anyway, police mobilised in impressive fashion, whilst out searching myself I bumped into several officers in three different locations also searching for her.

She was found, several hours later, moping around outside a school, good result all round. She has no idea where she went, in fact no memory of ever having gone out.

So my question, what is the correct process for commending the police on their response/work/result?

Thanks!

Myself and my then girlfriend once had issues regarding getting her kids back from her ex, long story short was Police involved and we had the children within 10 minutes. We wrote a letter of thanks addressed to the senior officer at the station where he was based.

Write a letter?

Manchester for example has an online form... found under "contact us" on their website.

Yeah I found the feedback form on the website, it all seemed a bit impersonal so was wondering if there was an alternative approach. I guess filling in the form can't hurt though, thanks all.

What a good result.

In my role I spend a lot of time looking for high risk missing persons, mainly elderly folk who have gone walk about and its not an easy job. Every resource we can spare is put on the job to get them found as soon as poss which was the case with you by the sound of it smile

If it happens again do not hesitate to call 999 to report it.

Get onto the internet for the force involved and you should find a contact page with details if how to get in touch.

Posting on their Facebook page or via twitter seems to be the way to do these things nowadays. The local papers love a good happy ending story like this too!

I think that's a good idea.

No doubt there will be plenty of people posting on their social media to tell them how crap they are, so it would add a bit of balance.

I'd suggest a letter of thanks to the Chief Constable , praising his staff and the top job they did , copying to the editor of the local paper(s) , if you like also to local elected members .

Nothing like a bit of praise , spread around liberally .

Letter to the Chief Constable.

And a conversation about sheltered housing so that they can stay together?

I recently sent some good feedback to A&S via the online form and received an email back a few days later stating that they'd identified the officer and passed the comments onto his supervisor. Same happens where I work too, so it's definitely worth doing.

Does that go on the officer's record?

Wouldn't have waited 35 minutes on hold. Would have given it 5 minutes max and then called 999.

The police are here to serve the public and as a member of the public your entitled to good service.

Often you get a good result by writing to the Chief Constable, as someone else suggested, but the CC of A&S is suspended and it's all a huge mess, so maybe not that.

It's not officially recorded in my force that I know of. It does however result in having to make the tea and buy cakes for the whole shift.

To be fair this is precisely what happened - in fact I would go as far as to say it was exceptional service.

I was under the impression that 101 calls and 999 calls are answered by the same people.

The call to 101 was answered quite quickly and passed through to some other central call centre, that was where the 35 minute hold happened. Our doubts came from two things, first, if the person answering the 101 call didn't think it was worthy of a 999 response and second when you hear stories of people calling 999 because a seagull nicked their sandwhich, it makes you worry about making a 999 call.

I realise now that was wrong, 999 should have been the first call.

35 minutes? Something sounds a bit broken.

Glad you got the right result, and that it sounds as though there was a reasonable response in the end.

Well just to follow up, we've sent feedback via the website, facebook, and a letter. Not much else to be said I guess!
