Displaying Non-Standard Number Plates - Rules??

One for the TrafPol and everyone else who might know this!

I am going to get some new number plates with special text and the St George Cross Flag on the plate. I have been looking at www.fancyplates.com and some of the number plate fonts on there look quite good. I am thinking of having a non-standard font for my new plates as it looks much better than the standard type.

But I am concerned that I would be more likely to get pulled over with the dodgy font than with a standard one.

Do TrafPol actually pull people over regularly for these type of offences and how much is the fine if they do? Would a plate like that i.e. easy to read but with a non-standard font attract the attention of the BiBs?

Just inviting a 'pull' then, and for what, just to look a bit flash.
When you get stopped you'll probably ask the police officer why he hasn't anything better to do, then act surprised when you have to surrender your number and have a 'Q-plate' on your car with the consequent loss of resale value.

Otherwise I might as well go to my local car parts place and get a standard set for £15!!

Surely fancyplates must sell a load of these so they can't be illegal right??

On the whole...the one you've displayed.....I probably wouldn't stop you...

Personally, I'd stick with a standard font. The borders and stuff aren't totally legal, but as long as it's clearly readable, I suspect you won't have an issue.

My front plate is a bit small, anyone who has sen my car knows how small, I've never been pulled though i have had a marked car coming towards me do a u turn, follow me for about a mile & then shoot off, the rear plate is legal. Perhaps i was lucky that time but ive had it nearly 2 years & not pulled once. Just dont drive silly & give them another reason to have a word....

Forget the 'normal' Police, you would certainly deserve a pull from the 'style' Police. Having your own plate is cringemakingly naff at the best of times, let alone faffing about with the font and stuff

Well, I've just bought a registration, S600 MPH, and have made the plates (from Fancy Plates), to read S6 00MPH , everything else in completely standard, as I don't want it to look in any way, shape or form Chavish! Is that OK?

To be honest, a mis-spaced registration is much more likely to get you a tug than S600 MPH in a chav font...

IIRC they don't do Q plates anymore? Don't you just get a standard plate for that year? May be wrong there tho...

Stick with the design with the flags etc, but get a normal font, and I reckon you'd be ok.

Besides, its a registration plate. Putting a flash font on a plate to make it appear stylish is like trying to dress Anne Widdicombe in an Armani swimsuit.

I was thinking about putting black/siver plates on my car as I think it would look great on a black car but I'm now thinking it would be too much hassle.

I've got a smaller plate on the bike but it is only 1 size smaller and looks so much better and never been pulled for it though. Probably because I don't RLAC.

If your car was first registered pre 1973 (IIRC) you'll be fine.

However, as it probably isn't; you're asking for a ticket at the least..or the most..: unwanted police attention...sometimes at the point you are speeding or doing something wrong...

Best to be a bit invisible tothe police..

No. Its not OK.

You can only have standard fonts with correct spacing. If you diverge from those, then you risk

1. Being stopped
2. getting a £30 FPT
3. Getting a £30 FPT and a Vehicle Defect Notice.
4. Getting a summons for Magistrates court.
5. Having the registration number confiscated by DVLA!

If you are prepared for any of those, then go and spend your money and see what permutations of the above happen!

My local drug dealer sells loads. Doesn't make it legal though.
