I knew my shiny clean licence was on borrowed time...

I stupidly failed to see a Scamera van this morning until I was fairly well within what I would guess was it's line of sight. There was very little other traffic around and I think I was doing something about (wince) 60 in a 50 limit, it may well have been closer to 65.

I hit the brakes as soon as I saw it and had slowed significantly when I got close to it.

So, the age old question is, I'm guessing I'm a dead cert for a NIP but do the Scamera operators have any kind of discretion? Is there an outside chance I may gain brownie points for having seen them and adjusted my speed?

Other than that, if it was as bad as 65 in a 50 what am I looking at in the way of points and a fine?

Standard 3 points and £60. That's what I got for 72mph in a 50 limit also by one of those bloody vans

Thanks KITT, that gives me some peace of mind, I was worried I might be looking at 6 points and a whopping fine.

If they were trying to sight you at the time you braked hard then the LTI 20-20 would come up with an error.

Discretion, no, not at all. If they can do you for 1 mile/h over their guideline limit they absolutely will will. Your fines are these parasites' basic pay, overtime, superann, payrise and bonus. You need a real Trafpol for discretion

The only way you'll get brownie points in my experience is to write to them explaining why you think you were doing no wrong. Explain your immaculate record to them and make up some story why you were travelling over the recommended speed limit. Make sure that you address it to somebody who will have the authority to judge your disagreement, they will then ensure that your letter is used in the re-cycled waste to produce toilet paper and hence brownie points.

On the other hand, fill in the form, put your credit card number on there and you'll not hear another thing, they're happy, the credit card company are happy and it will hoepfully stop you being naughty.

I've never had (yet) reason to browse the pages of this fine site, but over the last week I have spent (too) much time browsing the forums.

I say don't worry about it until the nip arrives (only 2 weeks ish if you're the rk) and if needs be go on there read through the other cases then put up your case for all to see. If you want to fight it you will get no end of help. I know that's what I will be doing if (when) mine arrives.

Good luck

It all depends what they have set their trigger threshold to.

If 70 is their threshold you may get away with it.

I got conditional offer from scameravan of 3 points for 95 on a 70mph dual carriageway.

I knew I was speeding, so seemed no point in fighting it, even though did not think was going that fast.

If you ever ever have this fear - do a U TURN, go back, park in front of the van with headlamps and hazards and FIND OUT.
Be nice at first - then get nastier if you need to - it might at least save the next few suckers from getting booked. ALWAYS CHECK.

Off the top of my head..."Obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duty; likely to lead to a breach of the peace"

Assuming the operator is a PC at all...

What, pray tell, is the penalty for obstructing a civilian in the pursuit of evidence to be used, illegally, to extort money?

Police Constables are the only persons who operate cameravans in my county..

As for illegally extorting money..
While i'm in favour of trafpol over cameras....
There's a posted speed limit..if you travel over that...and get caught....i'm afraid it's the driver who is acting illegally, not the bleeding camera operator...

While that might be true in your neck of the woods, I'm sure you are aware of other areas where the 'Safety' Camera Partnerships are not so fussy.

I am aware yes..

Those civilians in vans in other counties will have radio contact with the police control room. If someone wants to cause trouble..i'm sure they'll be dealt with accordingly....

Sorry SC, I'm not really looking for an argument, but I don't think that this is really that funny. What we have here is an unqualified, (IMO illegal) individual recording an alledged offence. The RK is then required, on pain of further penalty, to either confess or face a penalty at least as bad as that for the alledged offence based on this allegation. No wonder that so many cave in when the official line is clearly guilty until proved innocent. It's only when sites like Pepipoo get involved that ordinary people start finding out about how their rights are being abused and how they can actually fight back.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? What happened to the rules of evidence? They've all been thrown out of the window in the pursuit of road safety on the cheap, something that most of us know is impossible.

More trafpol, pulling more bad and dangerous drivers, is what we need. I think we agree on this point, at least.

I'm not wishing to argue either..and apologise if appear rude..
My sledgehammer humour isn't to everyone's taste..

The civilian operators in vans in other parts of the country are trained to use the equipment just like a BiB would be. However, it prevents the arguement that a BiB is wasted sat in the back of the van. We are always hearing about how the BiB should be back on the streets and not behind desks etc etc...

We do need more trafpol...for a variety of reasons...

One that doens't get mentioned too often is for pursuit capabilities....as panda drivers aren't allowed to 'pursue' vehicles who's driver has failed to stop...

In my county there can be as few as 4 trafpol working between 2am and 7am..!!!!
