From the Leicester Mercury........

CRUSHED! I REPORT MY CAR STOLEN, POLICE DESTROY IT

BY ANDY MANN

10:30 - 04 February 2005
Mohamed Gutane had resigned himself to the idea his car had been stolen when he jetted off on holiday.

So, when he returned to Leicester after a family break in Syria, he was astonished to find it had been towed away and crushed by police.

Mr Gutane, 29, had left his Toyota Carina on double-yellow lines in Highfields while at his aunt's house. He returned to find it missing.

Police, he said, assured him they had no information the car had been towed away, so he reported it stolen.

Then, on his return from his 10-day holiday he found two letters.

One told him how sorry the police were to learn he had been a victim of crime and reassured him every effort would be made to find his car.

The other, from Leicestershire Constabulary Vehicle Removal Scheme, told him the car had been towed and was to be disposed of.

Despite a frantic taxi dash to the pound, he found he was too late to save his Toyota from the crusher.

Mr Guntane, of Beckingham Road, Highfields, said: "This is a failure of communication. The police should have known it was in one of their garages. I could have got it back."

The car disappeared from the corner of Egginton Street and Abney Street on September 22.

A letter to Mr Guntane dated September 27 - two days after he had gone on holiday - said it was taken by removal firm Cockerills Recovery, of Wigston, on behalf of police.

It charged £105 for removing the car, £12-a-day storage fees and a disposal cost of £50.

Mr Guntane, who faces a bill of more than £200, has reported the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which said it could not act. It recommended he take the matter up with the chief constable.

A police spokeswoman said: "We will respond to the complainant in due course and, until our investigation is complete, it would be inappropriate to comment further."

HoHum.

Silly - but they should not DESTROY HIS PROPERTY. This is usually the job for VANDALS and THIEFS.

Ah, I think I've answered my own question..

Don`t think we are getting the full story here. If he was the RO of the vehicle, he would have got a letter from the recovery company telling him the car was and how much was owed.

I suggest he is a victim of his ow deviousness.

Indeed, obviously reading the whole thing makes your brain hurt even more!

Series of events:

in uk parks illegally
still in uk car gets towed
still in uk reports car stolen as police have no record of it
off on hols to Syria
while in Syria car gets crushed
returns from syria to find car crushed but they are going to do all they can to find it!

Unfortunate set of events for sure, but I'll bet he never parks on double yellows again, EVER!

There's no mention of the value of the car, but if it was, say, a brand new Ferrari 430, would they still have crushed it?

I think it's a question of degree. I don't personally find the story funny but I don't feel particularly sympathetic towards him. I think he'll be hard pushed to find someone that believes that he is a total victim in this.

The bloke's been a bit of a plonker and I'm sure he's learnt his lesson, you find your car missing and report it after your hols, eh? Even so to have your car crushed after 4 days storage without sending a letter to the owner informing him of his cars future doesn't seem right - having said that, it was a Toyota Carina.

I don't like to stereotype such a fine car but at a guess, NO.

He clearly reported it stolen BEFORE he went on holiday.

No. It would be sold at auction. The Carina was crushed because that was the best way to make money from it!
