Not something I do, yet, I hasten to add!

We have a problem locally with a woman that walks an aggressive black labrador off the lead. We are talking London residential streets, not a park, or woods etc, and this thing tears around the streets like an absolute tit.

In the last week, it has tried to attack our dogs twice, both of whom are much smaller and walked on leads, fortunately without doing any damage.

I have warned the owner that I know where she lives and if it happens again, I will have the police out to her. What worries me though is this dog actually harming our dogs, in which case, acting in their defence m'lud, I will put the boot in and it will become a wing'd dog.

We've had the threads on reasonable force against burglars; what can I do against this dog?

If it attacks you or your family/dog, you can use reasonable force....and kicking WILL be permitted..

If the dog is deemed to be 'uncontrolled' a prosecution can be taken against the owner..

Report the matter to the police and see if she can't be visited by the local community bobby.

Kick the owner!

Dogs are simple, but intelligent creatures - they respond well to training, and act badly if untrained. If the dog is a nuisance, then the owner is at fault. Esp. gun-dogs like labradors.

The fact that anyone has to ask the question is very sad. What we really need to do is kick the prime minister. A dog is a lower order animal than a human. Its life is insignificant by comparison. Incidentally many years ago I pulled a pit bull off a kid and a passer by and I killed it (by using a car door) Nobody questionned it as a decision possibly because it is a dangerous animal, though to be honest I would prefer to have battered the owner, someone else did that apparently. I think all dogs not on a lead should be shot on site as they are on farms.

Someone regularly walks his dogs down our road with no leads, they are both quite big (one is an alsation, not sure what the other is). He quite obviously doesn't have them under control as they wander into peoples gardens and out into the road - at a guess they are also responsible for a large amount of the dog mess found on our pavements and driveways. They also menace other peoples dogs who are properly controlled (ie. on a lead). Problem is, he looks like a bit of a psycho, so no one will say anything to him ! I have no idea where he lives, so what should we do in these circumstances ?

Are you sure it is a labrador?

Labradors are one of the 'softest' breed of dogs, they make wonderful family pets, I have two at the moment, neither of them would hurt a fly.

If this is an aggressive labrador then the owner has trained it to be like this, and I would report it, it should not be off a lead in public.

An alternative would be to talk to the local RSPCA, maybe they can investigate the home situation and bring a prosecution for mistreatment, I have never seen an aggressive labrador, this suggets something is wrong.

If the dog is so out of control that it attacks your own dogs, then you have my blessing to drop kick it to next week to protect them.

I think the owner must be reported. What if the dog were to run out in front of a car? What if the dog attacked a child? Either way, the dog would be dead, the owner in court and you would feel bad about not doing anything about it earlier.

Mutt k, what did the owner way when you threatened her with the Police?

Jail, how come. There's no legal obligation on me to save a scum bag ie a burglar or drug dealer. Just look at how useful to society some dogs can be.

Perhaps you should go into solitary for a few weeks and reflect upon the human race and how it integrates with the rest of the occupants of this planet. Dogs make good company, scumbags would nick your kidneys if they could get away with it

I kicked many an insolent dog in the chops in my youth days of doing a paper round on a council estate.

Never had anything happen, but that was about 8 years ago

Good, in your case I would probably help them. Dogs are dangerous animals of a lower order and should be heavily regulated. It is totally unacceptable for them to maul human children and the owners of such dogs should be jailed. I cannot think of a good reason to own a huge dog that has been bred for one purpose, to fight. Those breeds should be eliminated. Pets I have no problem with provided they are not a nuisance.

This thread was about one dog having a go at another dog which was still on a lead. This is bad behaviour and should be corrected. Nobody has mentioned fighting breeds or dogs which maul kids. I think we'd all agree that there's no place for dogs or owners who behave like that. Most dogs are well adjusted and socialised because that's how a pack functions. A few aren't because the owners are ignorant but on the whole dogs are good companions/workers and have been selectively bred by us for many years to be tame mutts. One street bruiser having a go doesn't make them all dangerous.

NG, I think you have forgotten what sort of dog we were talking about here, a retriever. This is not a huge dog bred for one purpose, to fight. If it was a Rotweiller, Pitbull or a Doberman then fair enough!

Don't ya just love those dog-owners who seem to think that their canine friends are replacement door-bells?! :-)

Boy, there's some fire in the bellies this morning, isn't there? Nonegreen - try not to extrapolate from one experience, there are millions of domesticated dogs and only a handful that are ever in the position of being a danger to others.

Until the last couple of years, I've always had dogs, and have even been given an 'untrainable' by my vet (it was taken in to be put down). All my dogs would walk to heel without a lead (though I generally used a lead when near roads or houses), and if running free, were trained to come back if they saw a person or another animal. Even the 'untrainable' one.

Dogs are pack animals. They need to know their position in the pack, and for safety, that is at the bottom. The difficulty is that many owners allow dogs to get away with behaviours that in doggy terms means that they are top dog (for example, eating before the rest of the family, or walking ahead of everyone else, or not waiting 'til they are told they can go out of the front door). Inconsistency screws dog brains up and then they behave badly.

What's going on with the lady's dog is (unless it has interesting wiring) one of two things. It either thinks it's the boss and is making decisions about who's in enemy packs, or she's inadvertantly given it signals that say she (as boss) thinks everyone else is a threat and it's protecting her. Or of course she could have trained it to attack on sight, but that sounds unlikely.

It almost certainly isn't the dog. You see people who have no control over their children either - it's only the same thing. Inconsistency of message usually. My neighbours are first time dog owners and have a labrador - she is all out of control too, but they've handed her over to me for dog-walking. Once she understands how to behave on a lead, I'll teach them.

I wouldn't kick the dog unless it's to save one of yours - you'll only convince it that it was right and you're the enemy. I'd try and catch the lady when you don't have your dogs with you, and have a talk to her.
